2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

right. exactly. bloomberg is that bad.

let’s put the line in the sand now. before the primary has finished. he’s not “electable”. i, at least, won’t vote for him.

contrast please pete buttigieg. for whom i will gladly hold my nose and vote blue. he’s no worse than either clinton. he’s not great, but he will give space for people to make things better.

( heck, i’d even vote biden if i had to. )

The point though is that at least he understands enough that they’re wrong that he’s making an effort to look like he’s backtracking on them. Trump is proud of being a racist.

i think it’s safe to assume bloomberg would do nothing to stop states from the defacto outlawing of abortion.

No, it isn’t safe. He has never given any indication of this.

(ETA: in fact, he apparently has a record of criticizing other politicians ‘who support abortion-rights opponents in elections, saying that supporters must “exercise vigilance” so that lawmakers do not “try to nuance themselves away from that commitment in the interest of political expediency.”’)

i would vote third party

In other words, vote for Trump.

Bloomberg is the worst of the declared candidates still in (now that Bennet has dropped out), and has not in any way shape or form earned the right to be the nominee, but anyone who can’t tell the vast difference between him and Trump needs to clean their glasses.

currently, we are talking hypotheticals re: if bloomberg were to become the nominee.

in that hypothetical land, i am saying people who actually want to make things better in america should rally behind an as yet undeclared third party candidate. i would propose sanders. ( who is already an independent. )

in the name of political expediency with a republican controlled ( or leaning ) senate – good luck. i would be happy to be wrong.

i will not pave the way for yet another billionaire celebrity candidate who acts actively makes the lives of poc and women worse, who will cement the wealth gap, who will leave another generation behind. i just won’t do it.

if the democrat establishment ( if there is such a thing ) thinks i will. i won’t.

the democrats have to earn my vote by raising up an acceptable candidate. they don’t automatically get my vote no way, no how.

I’d quibble with the “nothing evil” claim. Just because it’s normal doesn’t mean it isn’t evil.

Oracle staff say Larry Ellison’s fundraiser for Trump is against ‘company ethics’ – Oracle, ethics… what dimension have we fallen into?

In the interview, the former vice-president seized on reports that Sanders’ supporters insulted and made online threats against leaders of an influential union that declined to endorse any of the eight candidates still in the Democratic race.

“He may not be responsible for it, but he has some accountability,” Biden charged. “If any of my supporters did that, I’d disown them … flat disown them.”

The Sanders campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Biden’s assertion. But Thursday in an interview with PBS, Sanders distanced himself from such behaviour. “Anybody making personal attacks against anybody else in my name is not part of our movement,” Sanders said, denouncing such behaviour in all campaigns.

There are a few non-exclusive possibilities.

  • Biden, with a lame “doesn’t need Nevada” campaign, is blowing the “Socialist brownshirt” dog-whistle.
  • There are some overly enthusiastic Bernie supporters.
  • Agent provocateur tr*lls claiming to be Bernie supporters are deliberately causing friction.

If I wanted to cause maximum disruption, and had a tr*ll army, that’s where I’d send them.

Vote by mail is a wonderful thing.

A friend used to live out in Oregon. Vote by mail seems like it’s an excellent system (at least in how Oregon runs it- with lots of information on candidates and issues with your ballot). Having look up info on at least the down ballot candidates can often be like a needle in a haystack situation, not lots of good solid info on their stances, sometimes even on their own websites.

Well I tend not to vote for those ones cause they usually are not qualified plus I would rely on the wife who is very is a very politically interested person as well as The Stranger for in depth recommendations.
Then again you get candidates statements from the fringe like Goodspaceguy Nelson. He even has his own Wikipedia page now.

Yeah, the Oregon Voter’s Pamphlet is really useful, since it includes not just the candidates’ statements but statements of endorsement from individuals and groups. Even if the candidate that you’re evaluating has a statement that is too vague, you can decide using the endorsement of a group that you trust, like the LWV or DSA; or go by the endorsement of a group you know is always on the wrong side of things, and vote opposite them.
