2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

What I said a few days ago in a different thread

Well would you look at this, I think it proved my point

“At this moment the most compelling voice against abortion and Planned Parenthood is not a Republican,” Carlson said as he got started. “The most widely heard Christian evangelist in America is not ordained. Instead, he is a rapper married to a Kardashian who, by the way, everyone says is crazy.

“Kanye West is running for president but that’s not really the headline. The headline is that on core conservative issues, not political issues like legislation before the Congress, but on foundational questions about life and children and what happens when you die, no one with a national platform has been more honest or sincere or effective than Kanye West has been. Maybe in generations.”

Tucker went on like this for about nine minutes before introducing his first guest.

HAHAHAHA Kanye could end up being a huge spoiler if he picks up steam with the fundamentalists

And they aren’t so worried about the core Trump voters, because, well… racists.

I think the goal is to tear away the older, union, fiscal, (civil rights?) Democrats who just happen to also be very devout Christians.

I’d add though, I don’t think it has a chance in hell, given the other 99% of things about Yeezy.

That reminds me of a recent thread I read on Twitter:

“We get the leadership we deserve.” is the kind of statement you can only make if you have never once in your life reflected on who you mean when you say “we”, and who you are leaving out.

Who is “we”? Because there’s a “we” who did this and a “we” it was done to.

Have you not been paying attention to the fact that there are people who aren’t allowed to vote? Whose votes aren’t counted? Whose votes are abstracted away by gerrymandered district lines?

We did not all get an equal say in the decisions that led us here and we do not all have the same exposure to the consequences, and by and large the people whose game it is and the people whose skin is in it are not the same people.

But, oh. It sounds so wise and worldly and world-weary. “We get the leadership we deserve.” Such a clever sentiment, so darkly self-effacing. Let me just applaud your cynical wit. You must be quoting somebody very deep, remembering something very important you read once.

Even if there’s some of among us who deserve Trump and Gohmert and McConnell in power… Trump and Gohmert and McConnell don’t deserve that power.

I don’t know where the concept of “deserving” even entered the political landscape. I don’t know why. I don’t know what it’s doing there and I don’t trust it.

Rights aren’t about deserving.

As Hamlet said, “Use every man after his desert, and who should ’scape whipping?”

It’s food for thought.

That sounds real laissez-faire…

From another article by The Independent, about the same candidate:

This is exactly what has happened in our healthcare system: there is no incentive to look for better prices, and as a result, healthcare providers have no reason to compete.

“Hello, (cough, cough) how much for a doctor visit? I’m feeling real bad”
“Flat fifty dollars to see you, then whatever diagnosis or treatment charges depending on what the doctor finds.”
“OK (COUGH cough cough) thanks.”

“Hel-(COUGH cough) hello how(cough) how much for (cough) a doctor visit? I’m feeling real bad”
“Five hundred dollars.”
:Th-(cough) thank you"

“(COUGH COUGH cough cough) Hello (COUGH)” Hello, I–(COUGH)"
“I’m sorry you’ll have to speak more clearly”
“Sor-(COUGH cough cough cough cough) (COUGH cough cough cough cough) how much (cough cough cough) o merciful heave-(COUGH cough cough cough cough) I am leaking out of every orifice”

Biden’s campaign also confirmed to The Post that the party’s 2016 presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, will speak as part of the Wednesday night lineup

Can we also have Andrew Weiner (or at least a video montage of his greatest tweets) on the dais, and a video tribute to George Wallace?

Seriously, Democrats, we don’t need to produce the GOP commercials for them.

So is that working against Biden or for Biden?

I doubt it makes much difference. Maybe depending on the VP pick. I think it does, though, show how ineffective Trump’s “sleepy joe” thing is, given that many already people have doubts but aren’t swayed by them.

I think most people feel safer with someone who might inadvertently do harm, as compared to someone who is established to be completely driven to do harm, 24/7.

Eh. A 20k donation is small potatoes for rich people. And probably lower than other women under consideration.

No appointment at that level happens because of such an ordinary donation. Maybe someone gets a minor ambassador position where the staff does all the real work if they’re responsible for bundling a million. Still - gay real estate guy from Philly donated a million to Obama’s pac and got no appointment- Bill Maher thank god got no appointment.

I don’t think so either, it just shows how petty they are going to get. To Trump’s wrestlemania fans it will probably seem like a lot. Trump’s hinting too about her having some sort of a problem because of the Russia investigation.

I think the particular attention more hints that they DON’T want her to be the pick. He seems threatened by it.

Trump’s threatened by any smart, tough woman. So basically anyone on that list.

I think most of them would slice and dice Pence - and bring out the worst in Trump - which is no longer working for him.

Tammy Duckworth would have sent the Trump campaign into panic mode, I think. There’s no way he’d have gotten through the election without saying something monstrously offensive, either about her cultural heritage, her disability, her military service, probably all of them. He’s a grammar school bully, they’d never have been able to muzzle that.

He and Putin will find problems to highlight with all of them. For Rice it will be the Russia investigation and (sigh) Benghazi. For Warren it will be her prosecutorial records and her relationship with Willie Brown. Chose any of the options and I can predict what the GOP and Russia will use against her.

So it’s a ceteris paribus situation in that regard, and the GOP’s pettiness and bad faith can be taken as a given. I actually count myself lucky at this point that Uncle Joe is considering a woman of colour at all, being inclined as I am to vote for the ticket if an Inanimate Carbon Rod is the VP choice.
