2020 Election Thread (formerly: 2020 Presidential Candidates Thread) (Part 1)

He did give a great answer on immigration at the last debate.

The urge to censor transcends party lines. Yang’s view on internet censorship are right out of Tipper Gore’s playbook.

No need to be agonizing so much while the winnowing is picking up and not a single vote has been cast yet. But - for sure send your candidate some green and make some calls for them.

Had not previously seen this strategy. Seems like there is potential for it to bite them in the ass eventually, but I can see it working for now.

I’m pretty sure that trying Trump for treason would end in a failure. Treason is exceedingly narrowly defined in the US, and I really doubt Trump’s high crimes and misdemeanors fit the definition.

Some things are worthy exercises or just flat out responsabilities regardless of the presumed outcome.

Yes, in some contexts certainly. But I’d rather that people went after Trump on something where they could actually achieve a guilty verdict, and either put the Orange Shitgibbon in prison, or at least hurt him where it matters – in his wallet.

Since he can’t be charged while in office according to the AG - it’s all moot until impeachment happens.

Or until he’s voted out of office.

I sure hope Pelosi doesn’t delay that long or he might “win” - given how he’s trying to rig the game again.

This entire exchange is just an awful look for him, but seriously god damn, why is he so handsy?!

I reccomend the entire thread. It really lays things out.

Seconded. This one really nails it:

We all know Joe Bidens. We all have them in our lives. They are our fathers, in-laws, bosses. Often we love them.

And we know they need desperately to evolve. We can’t afford a leader who needs to evolve on the job to begin to see all of us as fully human.

I would say “sarcastically” rather than “patronizingly”; he obviously gets that she doesn’t like his policies, and is giving a snarky answer back. He’s been like that his entire political career, which is how he got the “attack dog” reputation which got him the VP gig (and why I’ve never liked him, I think he’s fundamentally a pretty mean guy). One obviously doesn’t like seeing him being snide to earnest young potential allies, OTOH I like to see candidates with a bit of an edge to them.

why is he so handsy?!

Yeah, I’ve shaken many many politicians’ hands, and almost always against my will. It is just a thing some people have. Judy Garland famously had to be warned off touching guests back when she had her variety show in the 60s.

A mix of both. There was a better way to handle this.

An older person in a position of authority punching down with snark to a younger person challenging him with substantive questions isn’t edgy. I remember having a couple of professors like that in undergrad, who thought they were the soul of acidic wit and dispensers of tough love when everyone else (other faculty included) saw them for what they really were: bullies with tenure.

The difference is that Judy learned to ease up when she was told, despite her issues and addictions. Uncle Joe has been warned about this working against him for years and he won’t stop, especially when a woman is involved.

Giridharadas lays it all out in his Twitter thread, where he concludes by saying:

I’m sure he’s fun. Heya champ, Like my dad used to say, etc., etc.

But this is 2019, and we need a president who belongs to the future.

He shouldn’t have handled her, in any event.

I think there are strong arguments against Biden, starting with the fact that he doesn’t believe in anything, but “holds hand too long while shaking it” seems to be pretty far down the list, and I don’t think being mean will work against any Democratic candidate in the general.

For you. For all those voters under age 55 [who are more focused on the future than the past, per Giridharadas], it’s an on-going symbol of his being old and out of touch and not a "president who belongs to the future.

It will if they lower themselves to Il Douche’s level and try to match him zinger for zinger, which is exactly what Uncle Joe will try to do. There are ways to be tough against him without seeming as childish and petty as he is.
