I am not making light of this situation at all. It’s my geographical ignorance. But when I read this I thought “Wow, that sounds like something from Middle Earth. Are they headed for Isingard?”

The real meaning of the name is very socialist, in positive way:

Interesting. There are two of them doing racetrack patterns. Love to see the payload bay.

ETA: The kid of a family friend is a Russian linguist with the Army, stationed in Germany, and has been “loaned” to the Air Force in the past. We haven’t heard from him in weeks. I would guess he’s having a hell of a time right now. Hard to imagine how much critical national security and national defense is in the hands of 18-20 year old “kids.”

According to this update from Trevor Noah, some officials in Ukraine seem to be casting a wider net - attempting to keep/conscript immigrants, too (13:22 mark):

It genuinely tool me more than a minute to see the “war” behind Ukraine. I admit hat I don’t trust olympic committees by default.

I’m conflicted between thinking this is hopeful, schadenfreude over Putin getting slapped and most likely thinking it’s complete bullshit.

Well, given that in Ukraine the bombings/beatings have continued, I’d pick “bullshit.” Or maybe bear shit.

Don’t they have cruise missile payloads now?

Extraordinary comments from Putin just now.

Says Russia has “no ill intentions towards its neighbours” and calls for international cooperation to return, for relations to normalize

Normalize - like get the fuck out of Ukraine? Wouldn’t that be step one?

Jesus Christ. If I was in residential buildings watching others get shelled, I think I would get the fuck out before mine was next.

It’s bullshit, but the hopeful interpretation is that Putin is getting desperate at the way things are going.

Echos of the Spanish Civil War (only not a civil war this time).

At this point, they may just be trying to destroy as much infrastructure (including living accommodations) as possible in order to make recovery as protracted as they can. They can’t hope to hold the country, heck, they can’t even achieve air superiority!

Now, they just be wrecking shit for the sake of wrecking shit, as it were.
