2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 1)

Yeah, that’s a tough call. I’ve detected a pattern with statements from Russia where words spoken do not match actions taken.

I would vote for sowing confusion and hesitation on the “maybe if we are nicer to him he’ll carry through on this” wavelength. He will not. This is bullshit.

The fact that still I’m getting called out (not here) for saying “NATO expansion excuse was just a smokescreen”* makes me think many people is willing to believe whatever he says.

*which makes sense, as at least in spain this factoid is repeated once a day at the minimum on every TV channel, be it on the news, or on the talk shows

As good as Brian K. Vaughan’s “Pride of Baghdad” was I am not eager for a sequel

A smokescreen that is wielded in an attempt to deflect blame.

So… pretty much confirms what had been said out loud here a few times. Freedumb truckers, COVIDidiots, pick any of them: they are Russian agents, intentional or otherwise. (They had better hope this doesn’t become a war NATO gets into, because being an agent of a foreign power is not tolerated as generously during war as it is in peacetime.)

One of my kids noticed this with Youtube postings; comments got a lot less nasty these last few days. Suddenly “Dad’s conspiracy theories” are right… again…

Yeah, but is not that easy to rebuke without sounding like a crazy 5G-flat-earther-conspirationist.

Like, what I’m going to say: “The media repeats that argument a lot but it’s not true, my sources (aka a forum that is curating a thread about this, the OSINT threads on twitter and a couple of guys on their personal blogs) tell otherwise and I believe them”.

Or wait: “This argument is mostly put forward by the liberal controlled media! Of course they are going
to say that, it is convenient for them!”

Basically everyone that is not talking to me in person thinks I’ve donned the tin hat :woman_shrugging:

Ah - sure Marsha - killing non Christians is A-OK in your book.

Remember last week when these shit weasels were supporting Russia because they were Christians?

Fuck right off.

I pretty sure killing non Christians is perfectly fine in her book.

US State Department tells embassies not to share Kyiv Embassy tweet calling nuclear plant attack a war crime

The US State Department sent an urgent message to all US embassies in Europe telling them not to retweet the US Embassy Kyiv’s tweet calling the attack on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant attack by Russia a war crime this morning, according to the message reviewed by CNN.

The message is an indication that the US government may not be endorsing the war crime allegation made by the embassy.

“All – do not/not retweet Embassy Kyiv’s tweet on shelling of the facility being a possible war crime,” the message said. “If you have retweeted it – un-retweet it ASAP.”

Seems like a war crime to me. :man_shrugging:

So . . . then . . . go ahead and retweet it? The editing/language pedant is confused.

Do not not = Do, right? Kind of like anti-anti fascist = fascist. That’s how double negatives work in English.

Plenty more to choose from.

I think the second “not” may have been an attempt to add emphasis. As in, “Do not, I repeat NOT, retweet…”

In some ways, the quarantined subredit r/Russia is like a microcosm of the Russian media landscape. Quarantined, discredited, paranoid, and quick to punish those who publish stories at odds with the official line.

I have to wonder if the increasing mud makes off-road travel too hazardous, so they have to stick to the road, making them way too easy and predictable as targets. More evidence of incompetency (thank God) among the Russians planning (or ordered against their better judgement?) going into this war.

Supposedly, Russia invaded in Ukraine’s winter because the combination of spring thaw and torrential rains make the terrain too muddy for most vehicles.

It’s near impossible to defend a point that’s counter to what the media is repeating just due to scale.
Sometimes it helps to phrase statements as questions that get people thinking but that’s a long game.

The low-hanging fruit is NATO and has been offered as a reason by a party that is not known to be truthful.
Demands were being made regarding NATO that were known non-starters by the party making the demands.

To me, it looks akin to an abuser blaming the abused for something they were going to do anyway - “look at what you made me do!”
