2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 2)

Sociologist Grigory Yudin was one of just a few Russian experts who believed in February 2022 that a military clash between Russia and Ukraine was inevitable. In an article published just two days before the invasion, Yudin predicted that a major war loomed in the near future, that Russians would follow the Kremlin in blaming the West, and that sanctions would do nothing to stop Putin — all of which came true. In February 2023, Meduza special correspondent Margarita Liutova spoke to Yudin about why Putin needs a “forever war,” and what might ensure the emergence of a broad anti-war movement in Russia.

Zelensky fires Ukraine’s commander of joint forces

From Kostan Nechyporenko in Kyiv

Ukraine’s commander of joint forces operation has been dismissed from his post, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in a decree Sunday.

Major Gen. Eduard Mykhailovich Moskalov had been appointed to the position last March when Lt. Gen. Oleksandr Pavliuk was appointed head of the Kyiv regional military administration.

Zelensky did not provide an explanation for Moskalov’s dismissal, but it’s the latest in a long line of recent leadership changes made by his administration.

Ukrainian authorities have conducted a series of anti-corruption searches and crackdowns across the country, and a variety of high-profile dismissals have followed.

It is not yet clear if Moskalov’s firing was connected to the recent corruption purge.

Well, that’s an odd direction as SA - Russia’s ties in money, oil, real estate, safe havens, sex trafficking, ports of entry, and vacation homes for oligarchs and oligarch’s children are deep.

It’s not that odd. Russia has aligned with Iran in several ways, and the Saudis really fucking hate the Iranian government- for challenging them for regional hegemony, for promoting the idea of an “islamic republic”, as opposed to their corrupt monarchy-oilgarchy, and for being annoyingly shia- and not necessarily in that order of importance.

The anonymous Finnish officer says that the Ukrainians “don’t know how to flank”, which is demonstrably untrue.

Finnish instructors are already training Ukrainian soldiers.

Skabayeva talks about the Russian constitution as the basis for negotiations because it forbids ceding Russian territory and the occupied territories are now included in the text of the constitution.
