Back around 1960 there was a common public elementary school exercise with an end-of-the-world scenario. (We were pretty obsessed with the end of the world in those days, nothing healthier for grade school kids to think about.) Kids in small groups were given a list of survivers of atomic annihilation, they were supposed to put together and agree on “perfect” couplings based on a list of personal characteristics, which included interests, skills, putative intelligence, and race. There was almost always a Jean Cramer in every group that objected to mixed race pairups. It was a great exercise for everyone except the Cramers, since – beyond group negotiation skills, and maybe some not-creepy-at-all early eugenics training – we learned about irrational bigotry. Jean Cramer of course seems to have not learned anything since then, not even that successful politicians usually try to hide their racism.
