There is so much prejudice against non-Christians in the U.S. military that I’ve personally known quite a few people put some version of it on their dog tags just to keep from being bullied. Having the alternate symbols as options is a great step in the right direction, but feeling safe enough to use them is still a bridge too far for many.

Throw in “ditch the corporatism” and I feel that way about the Salvation Army. My grandparents were deeply involved (my grandfather even played in the band), and they too have a service component.
But until they stop hurting LGBTQ+ and undermining women’s rights, until they smarten up their accounting so that they’re less of a “for profit” church, I can’t support them. Not even in memory of two deeply kind people who happened to believe.

It is an article of faith that parts of the government (FDA, NIH, USGS, to indulge my scientism) are run by professionals, who know what they are doing. Yet this professionalism has no constitutional basis-- and can be easily sabotaged by the president. Attempts to establish institutions that are responsive to both Congress and the President haven’t fared well in the Supreme Court.
The system of security clearances is ultimately controlled by the President, who in his infinite wisdom, can abuse it for political or personal advantage.

What’s interesting to me is that if Trump were as much of a doddering, insane moron as people on what amounts to the American left think he is, he’d slip up with his slurs more often. Notice, for instance, that while “take your wealth away” can be construed as antisemitic, he doesn’t ever toss out a slur about Jewish people that’s anywhere near as hamfisted and offensive as “Pocahontas.”
