šŸ–• šŸŠ šŸ¤” A Continuing Round-Up of Trumpian Events šŸ–• šŸŠ šŸ¤”

The quote was taken somewhat out of context - the point wasnā€™t that SA is necessarily ā€œbetterā€ than the US, it was that the US preached integration while being an inherently racist society whereas SA at least had the honesty to be unambiguous about its racism. His position was along the lines of itā€™s better to be stabbed in the front than the back.

Because DeVos cares deeply about the quality of education for children that have to go to public schoolsā€¦ Not paying teachers living wages, packing 30 kids into a class room, not providing enough support staff [plus a million and one other terrible things that these teachers are protesting] are ultimately hurting kids in this country. The teachers striking to bring attention to these issues are heroes. DeVos enrages me, sheā€™s like Dolores Umbridge: pure evil, but often overlooked when Voldemort is in the room.

Yes, itā€™s that Citizenā€™s United.

Surprised Trump didnā€™t want to hire the guy, grifter-to-grifter. Actually, with the current makeup of SCOTUS, this may be the best chance to overturn Citizenā€™s United, though Trump would call in favors to reverse it just for spite.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a sudden, unscheduled trip to Baghdad on Tuesday, as an aircraft carrier and Air Force bombers headed to the Middle East amid warnings that Iran was contemplating an attack on U.S. troops in the region.

I wonder where those warnings came from? Sarah Huckabee Sanders? John Bolton? Maybe Pompeo warned himself?

Strap in. Severe ugliness ahead.

This is the article you want to use up that one ā€˜free articleā€™ on

In fact, year after year, Mr. Trump appears to have lost more money than nearly any other individual American taxpayer, The Times found when it compared his results with detailed information the I.R.S. compiles on an annual sampling of high-income earners. His core business losses in 1990 and 1991 ā€” more than $250 million each year ā€” were more than double those of the nearest taxpayers in the I.R.S. information for those years.

The new information also suggests that Mr. Trumpā€™s 1990 collapse might have struck several years earlier if not for his brief side career posing as a corporate raider. From 1986 through 1988, while his core businesses languished under increasingly unsupportable debt, Mr. Trump made millions of dollars in the stock market by suggesting that he was about to take over companies. But the figures show that he lost most, if not all, of those gains after investors stopped taking his takeover talk seriously.

Then came the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino, which opened in April 1990 saddled with more than $800 million in debt, most at very high interest rates. It did not generate enough revenue to cover that debt, and sucked revenue from his other casinos, Trumpā€™s Castle and Trump Plaza, pulling them deep into the red.

As a result, 1990 and 1991 represented the worst years of the period reviewed by The Times, with combined losses of $517.6 million. And over the next three years, as Mr. Trump turned over properties to his lenders to stave off bankruptcy, his core businesses lost an additional $286.9 million.

The 10-year total: $1.17 billion in losses.

Iā€™m going to go ahead and hope this is Book One of a trilogy:

  • The Fellowship of the Grift (1985-1994)
  • The Two Trump Towers (1995-2004)
  • The Return of the Kingpin (2005-2015)

Charles Grassley was on NPR this morning, explaining to Noel King that the main concern of farmers hurt by Trumpā€™s trade war isnā€™t lost income and bankruptcy, itā€™s Chinese theft of American intellectual property.

Do the country a favor, Chuck, and have a fucking aneurysm. I canā€™t even.

I heard that interview. He was spinning so hard I thought he was going to hurt himself. I was particularly flabbergasted when he implied that farmers would be ok with losing their farms as long as we stick it to China. I have to think that he is in error here.

Grassley wasnā€™t good for Iowa way back when I was at uni there, now heā€™s an old sack of poison.

Iowa, you can do better than Chuck Grassley.
