It is massively stupid, but (and I may be misreading the survey) but I think it may have just been a survey thrown up on Twitter with no context, just āDo you want your kids taught Arabic numeralsā, so ā given the knee-jerk no-research clickbait over there ā I will lean more on the ignorant/stupid explanation of people who literally donāt know the term and are baffled as to why weāre introducing a new numerical system of any kind. (basically, I wish this kind of buzzfeed-level clickbait crap wouldnāt get the media traction itās getting)

I wonder if this is the same group that wanted pi changed to be 3. Maybe they are referring to Eastern Arabic numerals (which our numbers are based on)? Somehow I doubt thereās that level of nuance at play here.
Bottom line is most mathematics came from Islamic scholars. Hell, the words algebra and algorithm are Arabic loanwords. People have become conditioned now to assume anything Islamic, Arabic, or vaguely Middle Eastern instantly means āterrorismā while ignoring anything else.
