I had this argument with an active duty soldier who said that Democrats were killing lives with their budget cuts when the house and senate was republican controlled and the one that passed the cuts. There’s a level of complete disconnect between them and reality that cannot be overcome through normal means.

But generally speaking, the Army has been thoroughly infiltrated by white-supremacists and neo-nazis. Additionally there was a push starting around 2003 to switch to a warrior-centric culture, spirit of the warrior and such nonsense. Part of this was to obey without question (the whole point some would say). Also, the mantra of you’re either with us, or against us. After that it was easy to assign any problem to be caused by a mysterious ‘other’. Then when one conflates a particular party with good, and ine with bad, it is easy to see why any ‘bad’ act must have been caused by the bad party, regardless of who ever acted.
After almost 20 years of that behavior being positively enforced those who were I indoctrinated early are now in positions of command where they get to issue right-wing talking points as doctrine. I used to have a 2-Star who would disseminate extreme-right talking points from Facebook.
So yes, I can see why the cognitive dissonance exists.
