I think we can all agree that was a pretty dumb move by the cyclist, but given it was a race, it’s likely he was suffering from oxygen deficiency and probably wasn’t thinking too clearly.

In Jurassic Park Dr. Grant makes the statement about the vegetarian dinosaur being safe as a means to get Lex to calm down since she was panicking after seeing the lawyer being eaten. I’d wager he didnt believe what he was saying.

Also competition affects judgement. If he had made it past the bull, he would have had a MAJOR advantage over all the competitors who had stopped. In regards to risk vs. reward, everybody’s calculus is different.
