Current theory of the situation:
Rod Rosenstein, as suggested by Colbert, is somewhat pissed off at the way he was hung out to dry after the Comey firing. It may be that he was insufficiently vetted for loyalty to Trump; he was probably recommended by Sessions, and Sessions is a tricksy snake.
However, lack of loyalty to Trump doesn’t make him a patriot. Even if he genuinely intends Mueller to find charges against Trump, he’s unlikely to go after Pence as well.
If it does start to look like Mueller is closing in on Trump, I’d expect Trump to fire Rosenstein and then try to replace him with a toady who’d fire Mueller for him. Then, we get to see if the GOP Senators stick with Trump or declare for the Pence faction; Deputy AG requires Senate confirmation.
If the Senate blocks the replacement dAG, Sessions will probably just “un-recuse” himself and fire Mueller. That might go to the USSC, where the GOP majority will play kingmaker between Trump and Pence.
Whichever one wins, the midterms are going to see voter suppression and other chicanery of sufficient magnitude to lock in the GOP majority. If it’s still Trump, we get the New Confederacy, with the largest military in the world and a foolish and ignorant President controlled by Putin. If it’s Pence, you get the Republic of Gilead.

You know how on the movies or on TV in an interrogation the police will use mind games to get you to admit to something you wouldn’t normally say? Here 45 just walks right up to reporters and completely unprovoked he answers a question nobody was even asking about facts nobody particularly cared about therefore throwing more gasoline on the fire. I mean watch the video - he even shushes the crowd in an effort to be heard.
Surely he can’t be this dumb and this is all carefully calculated. Right?
