Goofy story, but thought I’d pass it along, since it’s Trump related.
A high school classmate of mine is now a nurse in a Detroit hospital. When the nurses round on patients coming out of sedation or unconsciousness they ask a bunch of questions (what year is it, what’s your name, etc) and used to ask “who is the President?”. But these days a lot of patients will refuse to answer that question, and the ones that do answer it get so angry that they’ve had to stop asking. Instead, the new standard neuro-check question is to pull out an iPhone and play “When Doves Cry” and ask who wrote this song – everyone smiles and yells PRINCE!

sigh It’s not going to happen, and it would be a very bad thing if it did. So many of the recent violent right incidents were captured only because people had video rolling already. When some militia nut pulls his gun and fires, you’re not going to beat him to the draw switching on your camera. When Based Stickman clocked someone with a lead-weighted club, it’s a bit late to decide to capture that for evidence. When they hear the squeal of tires, most people’s first reaction isn’t to press record.
During protests, I’ve always had at least one camera continuously recording. If attacked by a nut, I want evidence of what they did and that I didn’t start it.
Certainly people recording should be respectful, and don’t go for suspicious close-ups or circle protestors like they’re going for doxxing clues. Also keep in mind that police may demand footage, so know where you stand on that. But switching off the cameras isn’t going to happen. Get used to it. The old Black Bloc tactic of being hostile towards anyone with a camera won’t work when everyone has one.
I don’t think they’re asking for a total camera ban; they’re just asking folks to keep the cameras aimed at the cops and nazis rather than the anti-racist protestors.
Antifa and the bloc already have their faces covered, but the fascists are doxxing the pacifist types as well.
Camerafolk like Rebelutionary Z are doing fantastic work in St Louis, but the Berkeley situation may be a bit different.
I agree, and – slight divergence in topic – I think police need to learn this wrt their own body cams. They roll with cams off, then they’re supposed to remember to switch them on right as things get contentious. Frequently, the body cam gets forgotten, and, how was that ever going to work.
This is the goddamned logical result of bathroom bills.
I’m glad it’s being investigated as a crime. I wonder if it would be if the woman actually was transgender.

Smashy-type groups using Black Bloc tactics in past at economic summits have assaulted people nearby with cameras when going into huddles to change clothing.
And this is completely different situation from that.
- Always have video running, but be respectful of the privacy and safety needs of others.
- Understand that any protest is a high surveillance zone by police, anti-racist protestors and the racists. Plan and act for it.

trump wants war, he wants glory. Someone should convince him that there’s no glory in swatting a mosquito.
I guess that all of the half-joking comments about Trump starting a devastating war with a single tweet weren’t far off.
It’s a wee bit of a stretch to call the words “[the leadership] may not be around much longer” an actual declaration of war, but when you have two leaders this eager to blow things up, every word counts.
My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that an official declaration of war would require congress. But firing a nuclear missile at wherever they think Kim Jong-Un is wouldn’t. The internal workings of countries-of-law might seem irrelevant or trite to dictators. I think it’s possible a threat on the life of a dictator is more of a declaration of war against a dictatorship than an formal declaration of war.
