Y’know, having not followed Ollie North since the old Iran-Contra days, when I heard he’d been made the new NRA president, I had a fleeting thought of “well gosh, maybe all of this bad publicity has made them realize they need a calm, serious, moderating voice at the head rather than a jingoistic knee-jerk loony”. Haven’t you heard about the epidemic of highschool students unscrewing the doors of their schools from the hinges and then using those doors to beat several of their classmates to death before finally (and tragically) turning the door on themselves?
Well you see, when you are dealing with a recalcitrant bully, the obvious way to get a break in the negotiations is to bring in your own recalcitrant bully. That will always work in your favour, and never lead to escalation. So they assumed they had this one licked.
