In Roger & me there is a bit about Ronald Reagan coming to Flint and giving a speech. After the event, one of the attendees is interviewed about it by a local news crew. He literally can’t repeat a single thing Reagan said, but he says that he greatly enjoyed the speech and that it left him with an optimistic feeling.
(To be fair, Reagan was a master of not saying anything, and mass psychology is weird. But still.)

They would generate a few rage clicks with that strategy, but they are playing a level deeper than that. By keeping the race an apparent close contest they can drive the kind of fevered attention that really brings in the money. The tighter the race, the more money in their pockets.
