A Trump-endorsed candidate for Michigan legislature believes birth control should be illegal

too broad a brush. while - yes - white evangelicalism has probably become completely irredeemable - there are plenty of christians who believe in the teachings of jesus and are (therefore) politically on the left

america just seems to have more of the former than the latter ( mainly i think due to historical reasons: who colonized here originally and the theories white america created to justify genocide and enslaving people )

While I no longer truly consider myself a Christian (I’m more agnostic/atheist these days), this deserves a mention:

I think many of those so-called Evangelicals either don’t understand the values of the religion they claim to worship, or don’t care about them. It’s all merely a fig leaf to disguise their naked lust for power and control over others.

Yeah, and it’s disturbing watching them going from policies that indirectly hurt their constituents (and are unpopular with them, when explained) but they can deflect blame onto someone else for the consequences, to outright lying about their positions and the legislation they’re passing and then openly adopting positions that are really unpopular even with Republicans.

I’m sure the Handmaid on the Supreme Court is handing down decisions that are approved by her husband; isn’t it one of the tenets of their sect that the husband controls what the wife says? So in effect, there is someone on the Supreme Court who was not appointed.

I have to look at her 4’ x 8’ signs all along my drive to work, the store, or just stepping out my door. Every sign says trump endorsed.

The first thing she wants to do is impeach our governor and then do a forensic audit of our election and then this…

Sponsor legislation banning CRT & the 1619 Project, replace it with the 1776 Curriculum.

She wants to end no reason absentee voting which was added to our state constitution by more than 2/3 of the voters.

She wants to end the minimum wage in our state.

And, of course, she wants everyone to have a gun to protect each other.

We gotta get out of here.

The wife and I always dreamed about a place in Canada but we’ve had to blow through a significant portion of our retirement nest egg the last two years so that dream may be dead. Maybe just a cabin deep in the woods with plenty of non people friends.

Agreed. Martin Luther King Jr.’s doctorate wasn’t in physiology. Plenty have channeled Christianity for good throughout American history.

Not necessarily, no. Plenty of Christians actually do wonderful things in this world, and we should not let a minority of bigoted fascists define a couple of billion people.

Religion is like any other institution - it can be for good or ill.

After all… there are people like this who called themselves Christians…

She’s not a handmaid, she’s a Serena Joy…

She was a key architect in crafting Gilead, much like ACB. It did not work out as she thought it would. The handmaids were pressed into birthing children against their will.

The People of Praise declined to confirm Judge Barrett’s membership. But a photocopy of an undated membership directory obtained by The New York Times includes Judge Barrett, her husband, Jesse, and five of their now seven children. Amy Barrett is also listed in the directory as a “handmaid” for one of the group’s geographical divisions in South Bend.

Until recently, the group used the term “handmaids” to refer to female leaders, inspired by a biblical reference to Mary, the mother of Jesus, as “the handmaid of the Lord.” They shifted to “women leader” when the popular TV adaptation of the book “The Handmaid’s Tale” gave the term a sinister cast.

True about the Handmaid vs Serena Joy. She is being called the Handmaiden by a lot of people. I took a peek at her bio, and interestingly, her church used to call women lay pastors “handmaidens”.

Hah! I was just replying to Mindysan33 about the women lay preachers being called “handmaids” or “handmaidens”

The only reason Republicans were so “concerned” about “sharia law” was because they wanted to do it themselves instead.

Some of them have openly declared that they want White Sharia.

At several rallies in the last year, crowds of white nationalists could be found chanting “white sharia now.” Promoted by some on the far-right, the idea of “white sharia” proposes that in a future white ethnostate “the sexuality, reproduction, daily life, and right to consent of White women should be controlled by White men.” In a video promoting the idea, one proponent asserts: “Under ‘white sharia’ our women will no longer be permitted to live their lives as sluts…And you won’t have any career women invading your workplace either. Nope. Under ‘white sharia’ our women won’t even be able to leave the home without being escorted by a male family member. Many defenders of the concept also advocate making abortions forbidden for white women, and mandatory for women of colour.

I still haven’t watched the TV adaptation but I did read the novel and its sequel The Testaments. One of the interesting things that Atwood did in the second novel was to tell the story of “Aunt Lydia,” one of the antagonists from the first novel. In The Testaments it is revealed that Lydia is a former judge who escaped certain death by being pressured into service as a “Kapo” of sorts during the bloody events of Gilead’s founding. Her background in law helps her become instrumental in building the systems of government in the new patriarchal society. However we also learn that in all her long years as an Aunt she was also secretly plotting to take Gilead down from the inside.

I wish I could believe that Amy Coney Barrett was a double agent preparing a Machiavellian plan to destroy the Militant Right from within but all signs point to her being exactly what she appears to be.

The constitution was designed from the outset to allow a minority to be able to wield control over a majority. So, yeah.

It’s a dog whistle. To her and her sort — and she’s not alone — only two people of opposite sexes may engage in only sexual activities that may result in impregnation of the female. Opposition to abortion has always been the thin edge of the wedge: once that’s been pried open, all sorts of other rights will be next. The party of small government is the party that has an obsessive interest in what you do in the privacy of your own home and with whom, and will marshal the full force of the government to achieve their aims.
