He openly loathes and mocks their idol. That’s all that matters to those dopes.
But the American left is not monolithic. There are a ton of racists on the “left” here. They are usually more the pearl clutching kind vs the cross burning kind, or even the “pity while feeling superior” kind, but still…
And while I don’t follow Maher per se and I am sure he has said things I haven’t heard, but a lot of his anti-Muslim schtick comes from his militant atheist slant. By most measure I find him very unpleasant.
Um… Wut?
Some examples:

Etc.
I could provide almost infinite numbers of examples like this, but you get the idea. Bill Maher is very widely despised on the socialist left.
I don’t know about Dungey’s class background or her business practises, but she was an in-state student at a highly selective “public Ivy” school, spent 20+ years working her way up in the Industry through a standard path, and is also a co-founder of a non-profit focused on mentoring young girls from disadvantaged communities. Any accusations of tokenism and her being detached from the poor and working class struggle ring hollow based on her bio.
I was more confused about why we’d want to discuss the opinions of extremists who are advocating murder. Or am I misunderstanding?
I suspect that you’re taking “demise” a bit too literally.
Nobody is advocating murdering Maher. Many would celebrate if he disapppeared from public view.
I have a hard time ever using social media (let alone Twitter specifically) as a barometer of “what to think of a person”.
As @Mister44 stated Maher is quite anti-religion and if you do listen to his stance on islam, it is aimed directly at the militant wing of that religion and he has unabashedly gone after the same right wing militant christians with equal fervor.
I like Maher’s show, I have from its original beginnings on Comedy Central. If he were to be put off the air, I’d find something else to watch…it doesn’t change my world. I just don’t see Maher as an equal thing to Barr’s outright racist views.
Surely she doesn’t hate America that much.
My dad (who is old enough to have lived when this was a commonplace phrase, and had to advise me about the phrase when I was reading older Heinlein as a kid) states that it was used as a compliment. I.e. you did something good for someone that you didn’t have to do; “well that’s mighty white of you”.
I have to believe that the network spoke to her several times about controlling herself on the Twitter machine and not reflecting poorly on the business. When they saw she wasn’t able to do so - they prepared to act quickly the next time she acted out.
Man. I’m old enough to remember when Rosanne was considered not only funny, but kind of anti-establishment and edgy in her own blue-collar way.
It is really awful seeing her turn into not only a conservative, but a thorough crackpot and hateful jerk.
If she is the kind of person that conservatives choose to represent them, and to rally behind, I feel justified in despising them.
That all depends on what America you’re referring to.
I’ll frequently use Twitter links as demonstrations, but that’s mostly because they’re easily to quickly gather. This isn’t just a Twitter thing.
When H Kamau Bell and Hari Kondabalou were doing their Politically Reactive podcast, there was a running joke where they would stop the show and chant “fuck Bill Maher” every time his name was mentioned. It’s a meme.
Yeah, I first ran into Maher via the Gnu Atheist crew. Many of that lot were strongly critical of all religions…and many of them let that drift over into murderously racist Islamophobia. Quite a lot [1] of the old Skeptic movement is now aligned with the fascists.
To be clear, I’m not demanding that anyone here rejects Maher. I’m just noting that a large portion of the left, particularly the non-white left, has a long-standing and justifiable dislike of him.
.
[1] Which is not to say all. PZ’s faction saw what was coming and bailed out into Atheism+.
Ajit Pai better watch his back.
And I am stating this is anecdotal evidence at best. You are claiming something based on what you have read and seen; not some poll/scientific study that gathered data to determine this.
Er… did your dad get told that a lot? Maybe he missed the point?
I always thought that was a sarcastic backhanded compliment, or an insult similar to what @Stripes said. Using other words, “Mighty good of you to do what you are supposed to do in the first place.”
Hold on, now I gotta go google it…

Well shit - looks like it can be both. You can be genuinely praising someone, or sarcastically praising them.
Even with her $80million reported net worth; loosing $250,000 an episode of potentially several years along with all the promotional $ has to really hurt.
