Actually, Solo is good

I’m 180 posts late to this thread and haven’t watched Solo yet, but… WTF?

WAHT? WUUUT? W0.oT? I can’t. They did what?

This feels like one of this parallel universe things, not like an expanded one.

This isn’t even Maul’s first re-appearance. He’s come back two times now in the Clone Wars toon and again in the Rebels toon. Solo’s appearance would be in between those two chronologically.

I didn’t watch those, I think. I’m not even that interested. For me, SW is big picture films, and all the other stuff I can’t care about. Ain’t got no time for that. But a revival of a split personality ? Aren’t we going to see Snoke again, then?

Your loss. Some great stuff in there. But part of what Disney did erasing the EU canon was defning what is and isn’t canon going forward. Clone Wars was kept (and it is awesome and repairs much of what Lucas broke in the prequels)

Well, its already happened once in canon…so sure why not. I hope not because I don’t need to go to that well again and I felt Snoke was a stupid character anyway.

In the digital era there is no excuse for this. Whatever crappy video file they get from Disney, by now any theater should be able to fix it in the projector.

convert -normalize -auto-gamma

There is no fixing needed and the file from the studio is not “crappy” This is all about projectors not being set up right and theaters racing to the bottom to save their thin profit margins.

I don’t think you can blame a bad publicity still we got from a website on the theater.

I guess I am confused on your point then.

Yes! And seeing Storm Troopers hassling people trying to get on a shuttle made them far more intimidating than all the big laser battles they’ve shown them in.

It’s not about always being bigger, it’s about using what you have effectively!

What i found really weird and couldn’t get my head around is that the imperial march theme exists in-universe? When han sees that recruitment video for the empire the music is playing over it.

Which then makes me wonder…during RotJ when Vader greets the Emperor in the docking bay was part of the mass of troopers on display actually a marching band playing the song for his arrival?

I kinda wish it hadn’t been spoiled for you in a comment thread! This is why we have that cool spoiler text feature. It was a fun reveal at the end of the movie meant to really blow people’s minds, whether they’d watched the Clone Wars series or not (kinda the way it did yours). Maul’s a really compelling, fascinating character and I think the two Solo sequels they’d planned, with him as a big heavy, headquartered on a planet of Force-weilding witches riding Rancors, would be amazing. But I guess we won’t get that, thanks to snarky fanboys.

Normally I’d agree, but in the case of this thread we’re all commenting on a movie where the very first post contained this:

I think it’s fair to say that readers should assume that subsequent comments on the initial post could also contain spoilers.

This is the scene I think of now whenever I’m reminded that someone decided it would be cool if Darth Maul survived being cut in half:

I think it works as a stand-alone film and as as a film for someone who has seen both the prequels and Clone Wars. If yo only watched the movies then I could see how you would be confused, but if, like my wife, are a casual Star Wars fan, you might not even remember the prequels or that Maul was in them.

Oh, no problems with spoilers here, as @otherbrother points out I came here in full expectation of being told things I didn’t know about the film.

And I don’t really care, since much of the fun in Star Wars doesn’t come from unexpected, but from expected things happening. You know, comparative mythology stuff as well as re-watching IV - VI over and over again.

However…

Are we talking about the same guy? Red complexion? Kind of … horny? Weird grin? Not much of a talker?

I’m not sure about this, but cutting him in half seemed pretty final, and I don’t believe in miraculous rescues ex-post mortem, usually. Statistically speaking, there should be a very high P value against a H0 which he survives. And don’t get me started on a Bayesian approach, Reverend. Strong priors we have. No doubts can there be. Colour me green and bounce me like a rubber ball, he should be batha poodoo!

Exactly, it was the biggest surprise of the Clone Wars / Rebels series (all in-canon stuff). I rolled my eyes at bringing back, in a very improbable way, a guy who was just a beat-stick with a cool lightsaber, but his character arc ended up being one of the best things about that series. And they justify how he survived quite well.
