Lol well we can agree that I can have an opinion, at least give me that
After the fiascos of the last two trilogy entries, I was planning to give it a pass, and then against my better judgment went and saw it — and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike the trilogy entries, which seemed to have been written by a committee of hysterical, coked-up executives, this one seemed both to know how to tell a cohesive story and have some intuitive grasp of what a Star Wars movie is supposed to feel like. I also appreciated that it told the kind of story that one would expect to be told about the young Han Solo — heists, double crosses, foolhardy capers. It’s not cinematic greatness or anything, but it’s obviously the best and most enjoyable of the new Star Wars movies.
Part of the problem is just flat out Star Wars fatigue. Also while the movie was mostly fun it felt really unnecessary, to me a movie that was centered around another character and maybe had Solo as a side character would’ve been more interesting. That being said the movie we got wasn’t bad at all, but if they hadn’t made it to begin with i would’ve been just as happy.
My favourite thing was the Finnish translators correcting Teräs Käsi in universe spelling to Teräskäsi correct spelling in Finnish.
Well, stuff like the old witches of Dathomir, swoop racing, guys like Dash Rendar and Kyle Katarn, Force Unleashed, and Tag and Bink.
I guess for me, all that stuff is still there to enjoy. And then when it pops up again I get to enjoy a new version of it.
Also, we were so close to getting Tag and Bink: https://movieweb.com/solo-star-wars-story-tag-bink-cameo-why-cut/
I enjoyed Solo thoroughly, and am spraining my eyeballs rolling them at the “STAR WARS MOVIE OPENS BELOW EXPECTATIONS IT MUST BE TRASH OVER EXTENDED FRANCHISE OVER!” talk,
I haven’t seen Clone Wars but really liked Rebels.
With Star Wars this has never been a thing to me. More space fantasy adventures more better. We’ve had only 10 movies, and two animated shows now that is canon. And that is spread over 40 years. Compared to the Marvel juggernaut, how can SW be fatiguing?
I mean specifically Star Wars, there’s been a movie every year and Disney has no plans to stop. They have 2-3 live action SW series planned, more spin off/side stories, the new trilogy, etc, etc. When facing all of that i am fatigued without even having seen any of it. They just need to slow way down.
Beyond that i’m all for new original sci-fi movies, it’s a shame that Valerian movie wasn’t good.
Your loss I guess. I for one welcome our galaxy far far away overlords. Yours and my definition of speed and too much are clearly different. I again bring up Marvel. They have even more films and tv shows right now, if you follow them are they fatiguing as well?
I do not understand what that is supposed to mean. We have had one a year for the past 3 years. Was there Lord of the Rings fatigue when those 3 films came out in back to back years? What about Harry Potter? And has there been marvel fatigue? Like…at all???
The MCU has been a full on assault on our bank accounts and senses for 10 years now. And that goes well beyond movies and extends to TV and NetFlix!
Given the box office for the latest two releases (Black Panther and Infinity War)…it doesn’t seem like there is any fatigue there.
I’ve heard this catch phrase/theory floated in multiple places “It’s Star Wars fatigue”. No. I don’t even think that is a thing at all. It is partly a dwindling fan base. It is simply not as popular as some other franchises. It is partly non interest in Han Solo as a character for stand alone film. It is partly competing interests…there is so much more taking away box office dollars today than was the case for eps 1-6. It’s people waiting for on-demand and bluray. It’s a host of reasons that add up…but I don’t see any actual evidence that fatigue is one of the reasons.
Simply put: I don’t see any truth in “People are sick of Star Wars”.
Well, the witches of Dathomir got a season-plus in-canon story arc in the Clone Wars series, and the ending of Solo made it clear that any more adventures with Qui’ra (and Han) would likely be on Dathomir, so they’re solidly part of things.
And there were some solid nods to Knights of the Old Republic in Solo, so hopefully some of that stuff will be seen.
I think the idea is that the route involves navigating around the gravity wells of lots of black holes and other stellar objects, and a ship with a better/faster hyperdrive can cut closer to them and take shortcuts that would destroy other ships.
I highly recommend it. After episode 2 attack of the clones I was done with Star Wars. I was just not interested anymore and felt the world of SW was dead. It was then recommend I check out Clone Wars and I am happy to say it brought me back in with gusto. (in fact, I didn’t bother watching Episode 3 until well after I had finished the Clone Wars cartoon) If you like Rebels, you will probably enjoy Clone Wars as well. Anakin is redeemed as a character and the show lays down some serious SW mythos.
Khmer Rouge of Cambodia subdued all of Cambodia, and caused a lot of destruction.
Khmer Rogue of American Pop Culture has subdued all of American Pop Culture and caused a lot of destruction.
The bulk of Clone Wars far surpasses anything from the prequels, made an extremely compelling character of Maul, made me give a crap about Anakin, and was able to craft deep storylines about the identities and lives of clone troopers. The first few episodes (the ones they put together into the animated film) were… kinda bad, and show heavy involvement from Lucas, including a fey Hutt with the voice of Truman Capote as a major character. So uh, avoid those.
Yah, those were bad. I would also recommend skipping any episode where Jar Jar is the lead (there are a few) and when 3p0 and R2 go off on little adventures. Distracts from the rest.
I do love that Rebels did some cool stuff with: Not only does Rex survive Order 66, but they retconned him into Return of the Jedi
I can’t say I’ve noticed the part where I say Solo is bad. I don’t know much about it. I haven’t seen any memes or gifs about it. My browser blocks all gifs automatically. I don’t like gifs, I really, really dislike them, if I could change but one thing about the internet it would be disabling all gifs for ever. I said the last one was bad, and a gif, I did see the last one and I do believe I’m entitled to say it was bad. Not to overplay my entitlements. I just said I was giving up on Star Wars after quite a few bad movies in a row. I did read this review, which made Solo sound pretty decent. And that’s the extent of my knowledge about it. I stopped watching trailers and culture opinions years ago. I do read boingboing mostly daily though so I figured what the heck.
Just to clarify, I didn’t see gifs about the last movie. I think it is a gif, as opposed to a movie.
