After Euro defeat, English soccer fans console themselves with night of racial abuse

So… ‘the silver lining’ to this terrible story is that “you were right?”

I mean it’s not really a bold prediction. Everyone knows what happens when a black player does something wrong according to english football fans. You can literally watch it. The FA sent a message about this and direct emails about spousal abuse before the engraver had finished putting “Italy” on the trophy

Never heard of this guy before:

“Equality, diversity, shit penalties.”, which he followed up with: “All I’m saying is, the white guys scored.”

Lawrence then wrote: “All that time Rashford spent virtue-signalling, he could have been practicing penalties”, adding: “I can see that this has offended a lot of people, and I’m sorry that black guys are bad at penalties.”

Christ, what a complete arsehole.

Did those stories claim that the fans were all “woke”?

Racism exists everywhere apparently, and all that English binge drinking ain’t helping any.

Sadly true.

So. does anyone else wonder or am I wandering into conspiracy theory territory here… is there a psy-ops campaign against “the west” to stir up racial discontent? Clearly there are plenty of racists in western countries but that doesn’t preclude the fact that they could be receiving incitement/encouragement from foreign interests to disrupt our politics and prop up radical political organizations.

Between this racism, the fan break-in on Wembley before the match, and the laser assault on Schmeichel during the Denmark game, English fans haven’t exactly impressed.

When they were subbed in the reason given was that they are good penalty takers, but there were other good penalty kickers already on the field (eg Sterling and Grealish) .

I understand wanting to have Rashford out there, he is a national treasure and should have had an opportunity to share in the glory, but putting young Saka in the anchor position was a very strange decision, and cruel in retrospect.

Not really no. Racists don’t need encouragement to BE racist.

And even if there IS some foreign subversion, there is also internal “subversion” from nationalist and conservative parties all across “the west” who are doing this publicly and with a great deal of success.

On the flip side they can get penalised without even trying.

BIG fucking /S for you racists at the back.

Seriously? Have you never met White People? They don’t need a whole lot of help being racist.

Fuck’s sake…

Paraphrasing George Carlin;

‘Not all White people,’ of course - just enough to fuck things up.

I’m white as fuck but it turns out, total surprise to many, growing up to be an asshole is optional!!

Some folk see the St George Cross and think, “ooh, footy fan”, others think, “oh, handy racist warning label.”
British football fans used to go on holiday for the fighting. This year they mostly stayed at home.
Wow, Brexit and the pandemic caused a good thing…

You forgot this lovely display of sportsmanship

(Warning: violence)

(Despite the title of the video trying to spin this, this clearly shows England fans attacking Italy fans)

It does (though perhaps not Blue Grass ) happen - like most countries, but possibly more so in such a compact, densely populated place, location is everything. Some places are unwelcoming, sometimes xenophobic/racist but also as likely to be misanthropic.

The current Tory strategy of class-targeted culture war hasn’t helped those places one bit.

I take issue with the idea that Southgate is mediocre. He’s one of the most effective managers England have ever had. He cares about his players, he acts with dignity, he’s built a real team, and he stands up publicly against racism and homophobia. He is (yet another) white guy, yes. We’re long overdue a reckoning as to our Black ex-players’ lack of opportunities in management.

As for the decision, meh. Football criticism is very outcomes-biased. Plenty of people would have criticised him for leaving regular penalty takers on the bench if a non-specialist had missed it. He earned the right to make the decision, and I’m not going to be too harsh on him that it came out the wrong way. After all, he knows how it feels.

I think it depends if you consider things like Brexit and Trump’s candidacy to be “psyops campaigns”. It’s not a conspiracy theory to think that white nationalists are trying to normalize racism to gain political power through propaganda. It’s like the most watched news network in America, and most of the newspapers in the UK.

ETA: I guess the key part was foreign. It’s well known that in America the white nationalist movement aligns with Russian government propaganda. But I think it aligns because the goals align. It’s a domestic movement. The thing about white nationalism is that the nation in it is the imagined “white nation”, not the nation it is taking place in. White nationalist Americans aren’t trying to make America better (in their minds) by making it white - they are trying to overthrow America to bring about a white nation. Same goes for white nationalists in the UK, or any other white nationlist. White nationalists in all countries are aligned with one another and it seems like they all admire Russia.
