Their parents fucked, and probably weren’t faithful enough Christians, or the right kind of faithful Christians. There you go.
Driving through Kentucky toward Cincinnati isn’t the craziest idea, since I only have a few days to kill. But yeah, I’d only do it if I had people to commiserate/excoriate with.

We are SO doing that…thank you! Just the sort of insider knowledge I was hoping for!!
The straight shot from Chicago to Huntsville is through Louisville. Louisville’s a nice enough town. Then you can go over to Cincinnati if you really want. I like Cincy, I’ve spent a lot of time there, but is it really worth a special visit? Maybe if you have time to kill.
You will also pass through Nashville. I haven’t spent nearly as much time there as I wish I had.
It’s amazing how we’ve taken this thread about horrendous Alabama politicians and derailed it into a thread about Alabama tourism
It seemed like the OT conversation had waned, so I’m not feeling too bad about it.
It’s good to remind people that Alabama is more than just one idiotic Representative.
But yeah, I’m trying to figure out whether or not to just do the straight shot both ways (when the kid isn’t with me), or meander around and never actually go back to Chicago in the interim. We will spend some time in Nashville together, because of the known choices that seems to be the most historic/interesting option.
This.
People tend to look down on flyover country because of our weird politicians, but there’s a lot more to us than that. We are more than the people who elected them too. There are decent, good-hearted, progressive people almost everywhere in this country.
One way, sure, but not both ways. Cincinnati might be worth checking out. If you really want to see air and space stuff, you can do the Space Nazi Museum and the Dayton Air And Space Museum in the same trip! Western Ohio is boring though, so it’s really not worth it to take I-75 any further than Dayton. Take I-74 if you want to avoid Ohio entirely, but if you do that, you have to deal with yet more of Indiana.
Have you considered listening to S-Town during the drive? It’s set in Alabama. I enjoyed it (not safe for kiddie ears tho, I suppose).
Sick people don’t deserve health care, and healthy people don’t need it. Let’s shut down all the hospitals!
Republicanism is the leading cause of senility among white men ages 40-65. He should get help, but not on my dime.
I can’t listen to spoken word while driving, unfortunately. It’s got to be music or nothing.
Ah, sorry to hear that !
Got it. So the otherwise healthy people I know that have had things like cancer, birth defects, strokes, been in car accidents, have had sports injuries should just go get fucked.
It’s amazing that people like this can call themselves Christians.
That’s what Jesus said, apparently.
Hah. I love the “WTF, Jesus” memes.
Here’s one I did a while back:
I like other renditions even more:
I told my friends of the cloth that I did not believe Christ was meek and lowly but a real living, vital agitator who went into the temple with a lash and a krout and whipped the oppressors of the poor, routed them out of the doors and spilled their blood and got silver on the floor. He told the robbed and misruled and exploited and driven people to disobey their plunderers, he denounced the profiteers, and it was for this that they nailed his quivering body to the cross and spiked it to the gates of Jerusalem, not because he told them to love one another. That was harmless doctrine. But when he touched their profits and denounced them before their people he was marked for crucifixion.

Just a quick note from someone who lives in Alabama – there’s weird stuff here that you can’t see elsewhere and worth your time. I’ve been to a juke joint in rural Mississippi and Graceland Too in Tupelo, too. That shit ain’t in the guidebooks.
Huntsville is very cliquish IMO. Finding out about something of interest is tough if you are not already in the know. In general, there is a over-hyped feeling of all things SPACE with a hefty side of Old South nostagia. That said, over the last however many years, the options have expanded a bit beyond the Space & Rocket Center. The Convention & Visitors’ Bureau was able to convince a travel blogger organization to host their convention in Huntsville this coming weekend - go figure.
The arts scene isn’t huge, but fairly active (http://ourvalleyevents.com/, http://www.lowemill.net/). The downtown area used to be the private domain of law offices and bail bondsmen but has been reanimated with some decent, local, non-chain restaurants (even Paleo, gluten-sensitive, veggie options), several craft breweries and periodic public events (http://www.downtownhuntsville.org/). The Huntsville Land Trust (http://www.landtrustnal.org/) maintains a system of hiking and biking trails and offers hikes further afield. I hear occasional rumors of attempts at a music scene, but I am skeptical.
If you have a reason to be in town, there are things to do, the options are more varied than they were even 5 years ago and you’ll probably have an enjoyable visit. But if you’re looking for a standout, bucket list type reason to come to Huntsville, nothing really comes to mind.
Excellent, thanks!
Other people are also paying his salary. This is a Congresscritter, after all.
@anon67050589: If you’re looking to get work done, may as well stay in Huntsville. Then again, it’s about two hours to Nashville from Huntsville, and there’s stuff to do in Nashville.
LOL! Talk about a damning statement!
