In the UK it has always been Kiwi Fruit, but we knew the older name Chinese Gooseberry too, The flightless bird kiwi is probably the earliest appearance of that four letter word in UK English, and its use as a term for a human New Zealander is later. Thus kiwi is first bird, then fruit, then human; referred to, respectively, as kiwi, kiwi fruit, Kiwi. I believe this is rather more than just my idiolect, more than regional, probably national, but apparently less than global.
EDIT - the point being, of course, that peeling kiwis is not nice.
