Haven’t heard too many people cover Björk, The Great Discord do a great job with this one. They keep some of the originals industrial feel while stripping it down and making it punchier. Turn it up!

I must admit to never particularly loving the crooner-jazz-standard genre as a whole; like, obviously Sinatra is something special as a musician but I have zero interest in sitting down and listening to him for extended periods. Anyway, here’s one example of this sort of thing:

I do love how Laibach recontextualized Queen’s lyrics into something pretty damn horrifying. This is actually something they are pretty well known for doing in their many, many covers. I like to think of Laibach as the polar opposite of Nouvelle Vague.

Reminds me of the shitload of songs-for-misogynists that passed through unscathed over the years.
There was Jack Jones’ Wives and Lovers which sought to obligate women to look their best and be ready for sex in order to help keep their poor husbands faithful. Great music and ‘delivery’; unsavory lyrics:
Then there was the Bacharach/David film song Promise Her Anything; vaguely disturbing lyrics urge men to lie to their love interests in order to keep them. Great music and arrangement, though
And possibly the worst of the lot is In the Summertime by the rather creepy Mungo Jerry. The song advises men to search for women and, having found them, base their treatment of said women on their father’s wealth. Truly ugly lyrics:

When I first started listening to The Residents (I think their early stuff is the best) I became sensitized to them and began noticing a few Residents car stickers out there. I felt myself to be part of some secretive society, like the Rosicrucians or something.
PLUS: Drinking and driving, speeding down the lane (and this is 1970 UK, so “a ton and 25” is 125 MILES per hour), making out in the rest area, and illegal ocean fishing!
On the other hand, it’s hard to beat “Ch, ch-ch, uh!”

I love the recontextualization from a macho guy’s song to something completely different.
Not sure whether intentional, but the general chord progression and strumming pattern is eerily reminiscent of Space Oddity, which is definitely not a vibe I ever got from the original.

Even Trent Reznor conceded that while at first he thought it was a gimmicky idea, Cash ended up making that song his own.
There’s nothing wrong with Pebbles’ version of Girlfriend, but somehow I prefer the Beautiful South’s take on it.
