Anyone interested in more on measles?

We are really not arguing here. My frustration with statistics is how often, and how easily, they are twisted and abused. I fully understand their usefulness, I bemoan the widespread ignorance of their use. If i offended, i did not intend it. The original comment was my lame attempt at humor. Apologies to any and all epidemiologists reading. Have mercy upon me! :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh no offense whatsoever! I just saw an empty soapbox and though to myself . . . o 0 O (Self! Get a-pontificating!)

And no: we are not really arguing.

In the flailing spasm that is Facebook, I won’t cry over this one:

It would have been better if people realized that taking health and medical advice from a know-nothing closet Scientologist jackass is a really bad idea.

Can we just stop with “Celebrity Vaccine Experts,” please? I can’t act, please don’t try to do my job.

“Worked in mice”, the tombstone of many promising treatments, but let’s hope!

Something I really wish more folks understood. Of course, that would make life harder for some of the woo-meisters, but everything has a price…

This a good channel for understanding sciency topics without feeling like an idiot. And this is a particularly good one for when you get sucked into that awkward conversation you didn’t want to have. I mean, I get paid to do this, but most, well, don’t. Sorry about that!

Our pediatrician has this on the back of the doors in the exam rooms.

It’s not just religious nuts, though, but crunchy granola hippie types, too.

Today at Kiddo’s swimming lesson I was chatting with another mother. She’s well educated, degree in microbiology even, her husband is an engineering prof at the university, and both earned their degrees from prestigious universities in the Northeast US. Conversation was about which things we can agree to disagree about and what are redline issues, and I said the anti-vax is a redline for me, having had too many medically fragile people in my world over the last few years, people who depend on herd immunity for their safety. She grew silent, then managed a tepid “there’s a lot of fear on both sides.” I agreed that there is a lot of fear in these immune compromised people I know that they could be exposed to something that could kill them because of someone else’s belief in bad discredited science.

It’s going to be awkward at the pool tomorrow.

I find that the more highly educated folks make up the majority of my avoiders/deniers. Dunning-Kreuger all the way down.

Based on the comments, they are preaching to the choir as well, but maybe actual info will slip out anyway.
