It goes to show how much more attention is paid to charismatic fauna than to ecological sustainability. It’s kind of like how people are so interested in resurrecting passenger pigeons or thylacines, like that would be any more “natural” now than having killed them off in the past
People also seem to have some idea that the environment of the past (pre-industrial) was some static pastoral eden. We do need to maintain an environment that’s comfortable and sustainable for humanity, but we are a part of that environment, not the controllers of it. We have an outsize impact on the environment that we need to check, but even if the whole system becomes toxic to humanity and the current suite of plant and animal life the planet will just throw up another set in time. We need to do what’s necessary to keep our current system working because it’s the one humanity can best use, not because the planet will crumble without us.
