As Nazis, KKK, and militia descend, Georgia town shuts down public transport and park

No, not really.

Really processing my afternoon. I went to the Gettysburg National Cemetary to visit graves and honor those who fought in one of America’s bloodiest battles. On my way out, I was completely surrounded by 50 or so armed white supremacists. This video is onIy about 10 minutes long, but I only started filming after people started touching me, which was about 20 minutes into the altercation. I was screamed at, liquids were poured on me, and my life was threatened - all because I wore a shirt with the words “BLACK LIVES MATTER.”

This video cuts out, but I left on my own accord escorted by DHS and NPS after they said my life was in jeopardy. Anyone who says white supremacy doesn’t exist, please watch this and listen to what they’re saying. #BLM

Between things like this, Karens, anti-mask hysteria, all of it, I am becoming a passionate advocate of bear spray.

I wouldn’t want to be surrounded by that much aggressive (and armed) stupid.

Honest question (coming from a non-American): many of these ‘All Lives Matter’ folks seem like stereotypes or South Park caricatures.

I keep thinking these people are being manipulated by smarter and more devious types - lurking in the shadows. If so who? Or is it just a case of being emboldened by Cheetolini?

Maybe @kityglitr or @knoxblox can supply some perspective on the people themselves?

Edited for clarity- not trying to correlate education and racism (though racism is really stupid!).

I haven’t been to Georgia since 2002, but they simply remind me of the Bubbas I’d encountered in many southern states, including the US southwest.

I am only familiar with them through people I talk to in the US, Brexiters are the equivalent here.

It is interesting (and depressing) to see the current rage against immigrants from the “all lives matter” people here, it’s like they don’t actually believe that all lives matter and it is just a dogwhistle racist phrase.

It doesn’t matter if you have a “high school education” if you aren’t taught critical thinking and how to conduct independent research. As the election of dRumpf so vividly illustrates, these factors are sadly lacking among about half of USian citizens and voters, particularly those in strongly Red states. It’s even part of the Texas Republican mandate to discourage any dissenting thought or discussion by students from the high school class teachings as laid down by the state.

As I told one who was down from the farm-country part of California, why do they even bother with the pretense? Everybody can spot your bigotry from a mile away, why not just admit it?

It wouldn’t take much rumination to come up with a list of very well educated figures in history who were racist monsters.

And I will add, I don’t mean people 200 or more years ago. I mean people who lived during our own lifetime, who are hailed as geniuses still.

This video should be mandatory viewing for any public official who claims BLM protesters are “violent” or “criminal.” I’m sure none of these fine people were arrested for threatening to hurt or kill this guy in a National Park. Yet police in Portland are pouting about being told by the DA that arrested BLM protesters will be released without charge unless there is clear documentation that they actually committed a violent act.

It’s an alluring idea that hate is simply an issue of education, but that’s not really the central problem.

Remember, Josef Mengele had two doctorates and Harriet Tubman was illiterate.

it doesn’t take an education to empathize with people of different backgrounds.

most of these men have education and are still pretty ignorant

Small contribution per attendee to BLM?

A couple of Nobel winners the top of my head…

William Shockley

William Bradford Shockley Jr. (February 13, 1910 – August 12, 1989) was an American physicist and inventor. Shockley was the manager of a research group at Bell Labs that included John Bardeen and Walter Brattain. The three scientists were jointly awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for “their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect”.

“My research leads me inescapably to the opinion that the major cause of the American Negro’s intellectual and social deficits is hereditary and racially genetic in origin and, thus, not remediable to a major degree by practical improvements in the environment.”

James Watson

James Dewey Watson KBE (born April 6, 1928) is an American molecular biologist, geneticist and zoologist. In 1953, he co-authored with Francis Crick the academic paper proposing the double helix structure of the DNA molecule. Watson, Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine “for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material”.

Watson has repeatedly asserted that differences in average measured IQ between blacks and whites are due to genetics. In early October 2007, he was interviewed by Charlotte Hunt-Grubbe at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). He discussed his view that Africans are less intelligent than Westerners.

Agree - wasn’t trying to tie education to racism so much as observe you rarely witness articulate racists in these kinds of videos. I suspect those people are indeed present but egging on from the back.

This!

Of course, there is also the Not Fucking Around Coalition, who brought out nearly 1000 armed protesters to SM not too long ago.

I hope your family is safe!

Why not both?
But seriously, I think it’s just a continuation of the southern strategy. Keep us fighting amongst ourselves so we don’t turn our attention to the real systemic societal problems and fix them. So to answer who: those with a vested interest in maintaining (or increasing) current inequalities.
My neighbor has fallen for it.

I’m pretty sure this is a direct response to the NFAC protest and the recent conversation around people wanting the carving removed from the mountain (which actually can’t happen for a number of reasons). I’m just glad the counter protestors are out doing the work that others like myself can’t.
