I put boingboing.net as my usual online news source.
I said that liberal Christians get ignored.
I asked them if they had ever heard of the WPA. It gave my grandpa a job that helped support his parents and siblings back home.
I really hope nobody has the email address "learn_more_about_biased_polls_and_leading_questions@abc.net"…
I’ve taken it 5 times already and just found out that you can just hit back when it brings you to the donation page and it saves all your answers so all you have to do is enter a new fake name and email address and just resubmit.
A close friend from my university days identifies as a red-letter Christian with emphasis on the ‘red’. She feels that Jesus of Nazareth, were he alive today, would absolutely champion socialist values–not the statist kind but the localized, community-based kind. I thought it was just her until I met one of her friends who identified as a Christian anarchist, as in anarcho-communism. At the time, my mind was blown. Had no idea that tract of thought existed in modern Christianity.
I said the religious right get mischaracterised as sane.
Talk about giving me hope in religion!
“23. Is Trump a great president, or the greatest president?”
My parents subscribed to “TV Guide.”
I remember when Falwell’s “Moral Majority” group would buy adverts with clip-and-send surveys full of loaded questions like this.
I took this before and assumed that they were throwing out the results and just using extremely leading questions to steer people into thinking about things in ways that would make them more likely to donate. But then I heard someone on the Trump side refer to some survey that was giving them answers they didn’t want - except they dismissed the results as meaningless (something about liberals hacking the poll?). I can’t imagine they actually pay attention to the results either way.
Oh, trust me, if they like the results they will display them proudly as proof of their support.
Do you believe that if Republicans were obstructing Obama like Democrats are doing to President Trump, the mainstream media would attack Republicans?Almost choked...
And once your submit it, trump will have your name, email address and your opinions. Including those that he doesn’t like …
Would they need to? The Trump admin is pretty fine with just making shit up out of whole cloth.
A large slice of Christianity, perhaps the largest slice in the US, is, for the most part, progressive/liberal. Movement conservatism has worked hard to politicize the Christian church in the US and has succeeded in both creating a large radically conservative block, especially in the South, and in duping everyone into thinking that they speak for all Christians. Yes, it’s true that the Catholic church is officially anti-abortion and the GOP has acted like that’s the most important thing. The Church itself, including the Pope, however, is, by and large, in favor of social justice, safety net socialism, and so on. Arguably, the Catholic church is more left than the Democratic party. And, mainstream Episcopal, Presbyterian, Methodist, and assorted other protestants are also generally progressive. The black Baptist church and AME churches have also tended to be liberal. Nearly all of these churches have spoken out against torture, more or less every US war, stood for Civil Rights and generally supported progressive causes.
However, the radically conservative protestant churches, mega churches, and Southern Baptists have grown drastically in the last 40 years and, for a range of reason, have allied themselves with the GOP and developed powerful political programs. The Baptist church allied itself with slavery during the Civil War and was shamed into being progressive for a while but by the 70s, it was heading back to supporting, well, the slave owners. This slice of radically conservative Christianity has been allowed by the all-to-polite progressive Christians to speak as if they speak for all Christians. They do not. The Democratic party has foolishly discounted churches, with the exception of some black churches, altogether. Progressive Christianity, however, is a natural ally for the Democratic party. Sadly, the GOP has used abortion and the loud-mouthed regressive church as tools in driving wedges between the Dems and the progressive church and politically minded church leaders like Pope Francis are rare.
I’m condensing way, way too much here but, as an atheist who attends a mainstream church that is more progressive and more concerned about social justice, women’s rights, separation of church and state, and Civil Rights than the Democratic party . . . I have sads when I hear people assume that Mike Pence speaks for all Christians. He does not. There are many, many Christians, perhaps most of them, who care deeply for Democratic values and who are just as smart and interested in justice as, well, us atheists Jesus was just some guy who got his ass kicked by the Romans but, in his way, he was pretty cool and if he was alive today, he’d be knocking over tables in the Trump tower, marching with BLM, and telling Mike Pence to shove himself up Trump’s ass.
(If you want to read a scary but remarkably insightful article about how relatively few conservative Christians have come to speak as if they own the joint, I highly recommend this: https://www.autostraddle.com/i-was-trained-for-the-culture-wars-in-home-school-awaiting-someone-like-mike-pence-as-a-messiah-367057/. We are all paying dearly for ignoring what has been going on in the radically conservative church for the last 40 years.)
I just about spit my coffee when I got to this question. I just read it over and over trying to find the point as if I was trying to find the end of a mobius strip.
That’s the one that’s just there to filter-out democrats. If you delay clicking an answer for too long because you had to clean spat coffee off of your monitor (or needed the Heimlich performing), your entry can be dropped into the bit bucket.
As long as the catholic church actively works against law enforcement to shield child sex predators from the laws of the lands they work in, it’s a terrorist organization in my eyes.
It’s so basic, I can’t take anything the church has to say seriously as long as they’re working against justice.
