The people who voted for Trump were never going to vote for Clinton. I don’t want a candidate who appeals to racists and morons. I want a candidate who has something to offer people who aren’t racists and morons.
Perhaps a better way to express the issue is to say how can we select candidates who will cause racists and morons to become disinterested and forget to vote.
Well, picking actual progressive candidates pisses them off and riles them up. Picking candidates like biden or even bill clinton just means we get a moderate republican instead of a batshit republican. Soooooo…
Hurting the feelings of those bullies is kind of the point. I want one, even if I am an expat.
They won’t. One entire party of our two party system has been courting the racist and moron bloc quite heavily.
Why would I want a candidate who didn’t say or do anything that might threaten the interests of racists and morons?
I will vote in the Primary, but not for Biden. Regardless, I will not vote for Biden in the General. I can afford to make this choice knowing that my county and state will reliably vote for him anyway, just as they did for Hillary last time around. A third party vote is NOT a vote for Trump, contrary to what some people believe.
I understand that in battleground states voters will not have this luxury, and I hope they choose to vote for ‘Democrat 2020’.
I don’t think we have the luxury of assuming which states are “battleground states” and which aren’t. My Michigan typically goes blue in presidential votes; yet last time it went for Trump (supposedly. I would have loved to see the results of the squashed recount. I’m still suspicious of just how quickly it was shut down.)
I’m dearly hoping every vote will count this time around. And yeah, it hurts to hold your nose and vote for someone you don’t like. I’ve done it, and I’ll do it again, if that’s what’s needed to boot the Orange Tyrant out of the White House. I’m also hoping the primary results will make holding my nose unnecessary… but we’ll see.
Cute graphics aside, unless the political landscape here changes radically, my non-Biden vote won’t change a thing as far as the outcome is concerned. I’m fine with that. And obviously the DNC doesn’t give a shit, because despite the outcome of 2016, they seem determined to push Biden forward.
My county voted 2:1 for Hillary; my state 1.7:1. A lot would have to change. As for Michigan, I’d look closely at turnout in 2008/12/16. A big problem is that Democrats don’t get out and vote the way Republicans do - we weren’t made enough. Changes in voting laws may also have contributed. I haven’t dug into Michigan too deeply. I’d encourage you to.
Taking into account the very real existential threat trump poses to a number of vulnerable groups, the kindest thing I can think to call your little protest vote is “electoral masturbation”.
Relying on all the other voters in your state to vote strategically while you go off your own way isn’t a great attitude to have. We’re seeing exactly where that’s getting us right now with antivaxxers and herd immunity.
I don’t fully believe that Biden is really the front runner at all. I think this is manipulated data and strategic press to make it seem like he’s the inevitable candidate. It doesn’t pass the smell test for me.
whoever is pushing can suck it.
It does for me. I don’t think there’s any need to invoke secretive manipulations or political conspiracies. Biden has been in the lead because he has got the best name recognition, and benefits from the memory of Obama admin, back when the US had a president with a working brain and a functioning moral compass. In many ways, he’s been the default candidate so far.
Now that the first debates are over, there’s more awareness of the other candidates, and people who did well in the debates – Warren, Harris, Castro and Booker – are gaining, while Biden’s losing support. Partly because he didn’t ace the debates, partly because he’s no longer the automatic default choice for a lot of voters.
Those are all good points!
I do care who the candidate is. I have my favorite.
But if a ham sandwich was running against trump, I’m voting for the ham sandwich because it would make a better president than trump. It would have better ethics and better taste.
Fortunately, we have any number of qualified, interesting and ethical candidates.
