I don’t think anyone here has asked this question, and I would love to know the answer:

When are we going to get a presidential candidate who keeps a framed “XKCD” cartoon behind their/her/his laptop/work machine?

I may settle for a framed “Doonesbury” cartoon, depending on which one.

May I denounce absurd over-reaction and China-watching here? Mea culpa: I label myself as a rad-lib and yet I’m surrounded by old oak desks, lawyers cabinets, brass lamps, and figurative (non-abstract) art, including originals by prominent cartoonists. Go figure.

When we finally get a GenX or Millennial president. So, around 2050 or so.

When we get another Boomer president.

You’re doing that pessimistic thing again.

If we want to be really, really hopeful, AOC is eligible to run in 2024…

I was trying to be both optimistic and realistic, but you are right; it IS possible.

It would be more pessimistic if I said 2023.

I don’t know if that counts as “hopeful“ since the most likely path for that happening would involve Biden/Harris losing to Trump this November.

That’s exactly how friends helped me get through the loss of a baby, something they also had experienced. They shared a phrase, and it has helped me these last 33 years.

‘Shit happens’

So is Yew, a tree with beautiful grain, and every part of the tree is toxic, apart from the bright red soft outer covering of the seeds, which is actually edible.
Doesn’t stop craftsmen working with it, or making one of the most lethal weapons used in battle, the British yew warbow; ask the French mounted knights at Agincourt.
There wouldn’t be ‘serfs’ working with such timber, they would be craftsman and carpenters.

What most impresses me about that photo is that Biden knows about the ‘Hagar the Horrible’ cartoon strip! Having just searched for the character, I hadn’t even realised it was American, I knew it from British newspapers.
Regardless, to me it shows someone who appreciates that, no matter what his standing in life, shit can and will happen to him just as much as anyone else.

From the perspective of the plutocrats commissioning the furniture, there is little distinction.

Yeah, I thought it was German for the longest time as well (well, when I was a child). Makes sense, though. Nobody really expects something like a newspaper cartoon to be syndicated internationally.
