I like your name.

It’s a shame you decided to pair it with literally the most inane first post possible.

During my first year in SoCal a union tech at work approached me at my desk during lunchtime and asked me if I believed in Jesus. (Just prior to that he had been eye-balling me – the new guy – from the copy machine he was using.) To get rid of him I granted that there may have been historical records mentioning “his” Jesus; I did not elaborate… stupidly hoping that I could have my cake and eat it too. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough. He didn’t leave. He went on to announce that he was a Born Again Christian (oh, fuck) and told me that I was bound for Hell and needed to be saved. I think he wanted to make me his project and/or score god-points or something. He went on to explain his own conversion and the thesis of BA Christianity. If I wasn’t so shit-fucked scared, I would have laughed in his face. Later I learned from his tech co-workers that some years before, he had ditched his last name (his stepfather’s), gone back to his birth name, then gone back to the stepfather’s, and all based on some personal principle rather than on practical expediency. All I could think was that he was one lost and confused dude in the water, trying to grab whatever floated by. Anyway, all that informed me: Stay away from such people as much as possible and, if you can’t, just nod and smile.

At some point we are going to have to acknowledge that this constitutes workplace harassment.

Heh. Response: do you believe in systemic racism?
Cuz it’s real, and I can prove it…

ETA: also, @hecep, I always hated it when people approached me for anything at lunchtime at my desk. If I’m eating at my desk, it’s because I don’t want to talk!

It certainly was. That was years and years ago during a time when “harassment” in all its forms was just starting to see its day in the court of open public opinion. One thing I did do after the episode: I asked his supervisor to talk to him and explain that I’d be happy to interact with him in regard to work and nothing else. That seemed to work.

When I saw the silhouette of the hat and long coat, Captain Beefheart immediately came to mind.

When people ask me if I’m a baseball fan, I shake my head and say “No, I’m a Mets fan”. Never fails to get a laugh.
