Even if I agreed with their policies, the fact that they thought that Romney was going to win - right up to election day - would convince me that the people running the Republican party are just actually stupid.

Yes, then the labor unions were out in force that year, so I’m sure that helped swing the election, despite the possible shenanigans.
Relax, I don’t think Gore Vidal was doing more than venting his frustration. It’s more the semi-anonymous commenters on forums who spread these messages that you have to look out for. My reaction is to think of it like the final lines of Pink Floyd’s The Wall. We all stumble and fall sometimes, get frustrated at the snail’s pace, and we just need to keep helping each other up and keep beating our hearts against some mad bugger’s wall. Cheers.
