True. They would not have invaded Russia either. But they probably would have aided the Spanish Republicans as opposed to the Nationalists.
Which ones? It’s a serious question, 1920s Germany has anarcho-communists, anarcho-syndicalists, council communists, left communists, Marxists, Marxist-Leninists, Bordigists and probably others.
So, bitter civil war then. Probably ended by the other European powers getting involved in order to try and stamp out the communists (they were terrified that it would spread to their populations).
This would probably not be much better than WWII, but we might avoid the death camps.
It would have been the M-Ls against everyone else, they are the ones who seem to have a problem with unity (except for the assimilate or die variety). The Marxists might have joined the M-Ls, but it’s just as likely they wouldn’t.
The Social Democrats were the left wing group that nobody trusted, after they sided with the Freikorps against the Spartacist uprising. The uprising was a stupid idea but once it started Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht felt they had to support it, and it got them executed. That’s why I didn’t mention Luxemburgists in the list of communist groups.
It’s certainly possible, and maybe even probable that WWII would have still happened. The Treaty of Versailles really pushed Germany hard and another war was a likely outcome no matter what. What may not have happened was the Holocaust, at least not a the scale it happened in the timeline we got.
I wouldn’t underestimate the effect of a charismatic leader, but Trump does seem replacable. Almost every family has “that uncle on Facebook” who could take Trump’s place with the “easy” solutions that make sense on paper. Build the wall! Nuke the sand(bleeps)! Open up my father’s old Coal Mine again! Why isn’t the government doing any of these easy solutions that ignore all of the realities of the modern world?!?
