Like most British airports, it’s an ex-WW2 airfield. The other two options were Whitchurch, which was already being built on in the 60’s, and Filton, which is so close to the city, noise was a big problem (plus every time a Concorde landed or took off, traffic on the road at the end of the runway would stop so people could watch)
