The other difference from an ‘insanity plea’ is that you can be sectioned against your will. This bloke might have thought he was entirely sane, and may have been hoping to get a prison sentence to behave like a martyr, but the court has effectively said “you’re not a stormtrooper, you’re just ill”.
On the downside, he’ll only be locked up as long as his doctors think he needs to be. It’s possible he could be let out in six months, and he’d never spend a day in prison.
When i saw hospital i thought it was a literal hospital to treat his burns…i guess mental institution is better than nothing, but it would be really nice to see this ass go to prison.
Ya know what? To heck with it. I’ve tried being understanding, and compassionate, and forgiving, and I’m worn out. This @!%# and others like him - I don't care anymore. I've been as Christian as I can for as long as I can, and him and his ilk have exhausted my patience. From now on, @%# trying to understand and care. Just get rid of him and his type and save my effort. They’re not worth my time.
How oddly the brain works; I don’t remember having heard the name, “Marinus van der Lubbe”; but I immediately knew who you were referring to. Context! It works!
On the other hand he might spend the rest of his life in Broadmoor, and would personally have been better off being found sane and guilty by the court. The Nazi arsehole who did the 1999 London nail bombings was diagnosed as schizophrenic and is unlikely to leave prison alive. I can’t say I’m unhappy about that outcome, just the way it happened.
I’m probably about as far from wanting to defend Nazis as you can get (my comment history should back this up) but sectioning is something I fear as a libertarian-socialist and PTSD sufferer, and considering how Extinction Rebellion was classed as a terrorist organisation I feel justified in that fear. I don’t believe the apology from the police, they keep doing this over and over again.
