Yay? Should we celebrate by breaking out the moldy marmalade?
I wonder if, when the EU agreed to an extension until October 31, they figured that a month and a half of it would be figuring out who the new leader of the Tories would be.
I don’t think the Tories can form a euro-positive government. If every single euro-positive tory won their seat, even in impossible ridings, would that be enough for a majority?
Honestly I think we might see the end of the Tories in the same way they died in Canada in the 90s. Have some hardliners form a new startup fascist party that will be more popular with the Tory base than the Tories are, give Labour a few free elections against a divided opposition, and then when it’s time to unite the right, the fascists eat the Tories rather than the other way around.
I’m sure that the EU are collectively rolling their eyes and starting to work out how much of an extension-to-the-extension we will need.
The is an already established right wing alternative in the Liberal Democrats, so if they get their act together and eat the non-fascist tories first it might not happen.
The leader of the Lib-Dems is retiring, so we are going to have two leadership elections at once.
They just re-used the Pob puppet for Gove.
An ethical politician who wanted to act with the best interests of the country in mind would immediately revoke Article 50 before leaving office. So what if the brexiteers howl and scream, most of the country would breathe a sigh of relief. Within a year everyone would quietly agree never to speak of the insanity again.
In a generation or two the revocation would be seen as a wise choice, self sacrificing herself.
Of course, that would require an ethical politician.
Yet another celebrity from my childhood who turned out to be pure evil
was nonetheless able to form a government with the help of an Irish cult
Well, it was the help of £1bn of public money, to be fair.
Assuming you must mean Pob seeing as Gove has been clearly evil from the get-go…
It’s too bad she gave two weeks notice. If she’d given only one week late night comedians could have had a field day with the end of May coming at the end of May.
Ignorant. This is why we need to start paying teachers the same salary as hedge fund managers.
Well, kind of funny in a gallows humor type of comedy.
Labour have been quietly self-destructing in the background as well, it is hard to imagine them winning a majority. The question is which coalition would win (or whether any coalition not including Farage’s new party could win).
I noticed you linked to that previously, is it worth a read? I’ve been meaning to download it.
As for May… i have no sympathy to give - nada, zip, zero. With magnificent irony she now shows a shred of emotion and a bunch of tories talking about her duty to the country when that duty has been disastrous and damaging both as PM and home secretary. Her replacement could be a lot worse though so parliament needs to revoke article 50 and call a general election.
Yeah I think the only viable option I can think of is to divide the UK into two halves, and designate one as in the EU and the other as out of the EU, then arrange house swaps between the two, so that people with appropriate views live in the correct zone.
This reads like the platform for Scottish independence.
The kind of people who voted Leave and still support it are, for the most part, the kind of people who will insist on staying where they currently live until they die. The provincial and narrow-minded and xenophobic outlook carries over from the international view to the local.
Remainers who have the means and inclination to do so will move out of the country, following the corporations that have already packed up shop. If they want to stay close by in an English-speaking country or if they have fewer options, they might try for Ireland or perhaps (as @tuhu notes) an independent Scotland.
If, as seems likely, one of these hard Brexiteers becomes PM the Scots should give another separation referendum predicated on continuing EU membership a try, assuming the EU is amenable (an independent Scotland would likely also have to be on the Euro rather than its own currency). I believe the SNP is aiming for a new vote in mid-2021.
honest, in a very weird and fucked up way. they not even pretend anymore, its just plain lying and everybody sees and knows it. open corruption is completly normal now and no one gives a fuck.
