He’s the sort of person who will haul out his father’s service in the Second World War as being somehow relevant to the UK’s current situation and trading relationship with Germany and state that he “was in the Army” and “wasn’t trained to lose” with his entire military service consisting of a stint in the Territorial Army.

Tory party elections are entertaining in that one of the few things that approach certainty is that the ‘frontrunner’ and favourite will not be elected.
What tends to happen is that the main candidates all kill each other off and some no-hoper swoops in to take the throne. It’s a little known fact that Hamlet is in fact based on a time-travelling Shakespeare’s impressions of a Tory leadership contest.
In Boris’s case, his chances are pretty good in that he is very popular among Tory members and random punters but terrible in that pretty much every Tory MP and anyone who has ever worked with him, hates him with a passion.
I would say the only way he will get elected Tory leader is if all the other candidates are prepared to hold their noses and vote him in on the basis that he is the only person who might get them re-elected.
