What’s the name of that porno?
Dude(ette), those are totally bolt-on boobs.
I worry that sexism is getting more widespread and more severe.
While I completely disagree with every single point made by Jannelle Asselin, I have to agree with the sentiment here. People take their stupid trolling too far. Still, you need to quit acting like it’s only women that face this kind of stuff. Not even predominately. It’s pretty 50/50 Don’t believe me, just ask Jim Sterling.
Still, it’s a comic book. In a perfect world, perhaps people will grow up and be more mature. Perhaps people will gleefully buy comic books featuring obese unattractive females as the centering feature of the cover art. Perhaps no one will ever need to find reason to be bitchy about anything at all… Ever.
In the meantime, those of us who live in the real world, know that’s a no. It’s not happening anytime soon! The comic book world, which is predominately male, do not want to buy a comic book featuring some ugly “hagfest” as their main female heroine. They’re not going to stop trolling because you shed a tear. You’re going to get horrible threats sent your way, because idiots don’t like differing opinions. It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female in this industry.
If you want rounding applause for pointing out stupid shit, then go to sleep. If you want to do your job, without fear of stupid threats, stop having an opinion. If you want to see the world as you do, tell people your opinions, and get paid for it. Grit your teeth and see through the stupid.
By the way… The entire point of having female characters in the comic book role is to have “objectified skin for old men to wank to” Grow up!
If you want comic books with women portrayed the way you imagine the infallible female form should be portrayed, make your own comic books. You simply can’t go wrong. You’ll have haters, and you have fans.
Oh please. Safe for American hang ups about everyone under the age of 18 being a child, the Teen Titans are adults. These aren’t Power Pack and there’s nothing remotely childlike about them.
It’s absurdity to the highest degree to be concerned about their sexuality because of their age, but not about the violence they are exposed to or inflict on others on a regular basis.
Who knows for sure?
Or perhaps humans are freaky people and we learn to hide it for fear of shame… or worse. The internet has given a more public voice to the assholes of the world, and I kind of think that may be a good thing. Lets throw it on the table and deal with it, instead of personally and socially burying it.
That depends heavily on what you mean by “this kind of stuff.” Surely you aren’t suggesting that male characters in comic books are sexually objectified to the extent that female characters are, or that men who criticize comic art online are regularly threatened with rape in the comments sections?
That’s actually kind of what I’m implying. Yes. Save for the rape part. That seems to be focused on women in general, and gay men.
A lesson I learned back in my political blogging days. Dont feed the trolls.
No, I think men are actually better off if they learn not to be abusive assholes.
Note: notwithstanding my earlier comment, a ban was necessary for the user who posted about teenage girls, women getting “■■■■■” and such … sorry I let it even stay live at all.
I’d much rather this thread have been about things other than anxious comparisons between sexy depictions of minor-age girls with boob jobs and adult porn actresses – or the suggestion that criticizing sexism is prudery.
So let them spew their ignorance and be held accountable for it. That’s a great way to learn.
It is horrible, but we’re effectively ignoring the problem that really needs to be addressed and fixed. By way of a not perfect analogy, why should stand up comics have to put up with hecklers who are there only to heckle? Why do audiences at large ignore the heckler instead of shaming him out of the room? Until we shame trolls out of the room by creating a culture of ‘we’re not going to put up with this crap’, it will continue unabated. Not that trolls are capable of feeling shame. Instead, just delete trollsome comments, eliminate trollsome twitter accounts and turn over to the FBI every threat of violence or rape. Threats don’t get the free speech go ahead and at least the FBI will be kept busy doing something potentially useful for a change.
As for the imagery that kicked off this nonsense, anyone with a pair of eyes and a functioning brain should clearly see that the girl is highly sexualized in a completely inappropriate manner. Anyone who doesn’t think so is in denial. Compare her to the green guy in the foreground, who is clearly fit and well-defined, but not drawn way out of proportion. You could see this guy in the gym owning rings or bars, or doing parkour - he’s realistic (but green).
Getting back on topic. It really is worth reading the source article in full:
Apologies to @beschizza but I do not think his summary BB post captured the rather nuanced position – and the complete and utter lack of outrage – of the excellent original article it summarized.
For example, this is cover #1 of a series reboot with a history in young adults and the 80s. Should I also mention there is a very excellent teen titans cartoon which is aimed at even younger kids and is hilarious even for adults? What message does a cover like this send in that specific context?
This entire post is a testament to the fact that we are not ignoring that point because indeed that is exactly what the post is about as well as the entire post at the Daily beast that prompted Rob to blog it here. If you are looking for people who are ignoring that then you’ll have to look elsewhere I’m afraid.
Anime always ruins everything forever. Ugh. The worst. This is what Starfire looks like:
See, though, that’s exactly what a number of people have suggested right here. Didn’t you know that when supes is drawn as a gigantic muscled freak, that’s actually not a depiction of male power, but an example of men being objectified by the female gaze?
Well, that depends how many dudes are secretly gay, doesn’t it?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Seriously…my ex had tits and a waistline like that when we dated in high school. I can remember liking it then. Does that make me a bad person? Bob knows I no longer want to have sex with her. Should I think about my times with her then with disgust now? If a comic book cover made me remember her then should I be locked up?
The answer to this question is “No. No I can’t.”
