Accurate.
Experience is the best teacher.
I went to the actual chagrin falls high. One day we had “diversity day” where black kids came from other schools to tell us what was up.
I’m assuming Reuben has a connection, too…
And the only teacher left after you arrest all the others!
Principle, “See, kids, Critical Race Theory has ruined your education by getting all of your teachers fired. This is all the fault of THOSE people.”
So, what was up? Were they down with Pogs or not?
First they came for the teachers and I said “Hey, wait a minute! This seems really bad!”
News flash: CRT has never been taught in grade schools or high schools, and isn’t being taught now.
So, you don’t have to worry anymore!
Unless, of course, what you’re worried about is students learning the full history of the U.S., including all the ugly bits. But that’s not actually CRT, so you should be fine.
I remember that my high school in Ohio was the first in the entire state to institute an African American History class into its curriculum, and how newsworthy and “groundbreaking” it was at the time - and it still wasn’t and isn’t CRT.
People who like the current status quo because it benefits them are just uncomfortable with the truth being taught; The US as we know it was built upon the exploitation and enslavement of POC, first the Indigenous Peoples, and then stolen Africans who were forced against their will to toil the land.
The vast majority of people who oppose CRT don’t actually know what CRT is. It’s a scholarly legal concept and is not (as some right-wing pundits and their rubes would try to have us believe) taught in K-12 schools.
Those who, out of ignorance or malice, spread the talking points of rabble-rousing bigots and who want to deny historical realities (like institutional racism) seem to be the sort who take George Santayana’s famous quote as an exhortation rather than as the intended warning.
Oh, I’m hip.
Especially considering that accurate US history is barely even taught in the public school system, grades K-12… the claim that anyone is actively ‘teaching CRT’ is laughable at best.
Critical Race Theory is like BLM or Queerness or Vaccination or Socialism or Marxism or Fascism.
It’s a well defined thing which is actively being divorced from that meaning so that it means whatever the bad-faith actors want it to mean so that
- everything their enemies (which is: us) say can be subsumed into it and immediately dismissed, and
- make it so that we can’t even talk about any of these things, because they’ve poisoned all the terms we have been using to do so.
'Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. ’
FTFY.
At some point, ignorance becomes malice.
You forgot “wokeness”. It used to mean aware of the need for change, compassion and caring and taking action to bring about true equality and to move away from racial prejudice mainly with regards to sociopolitical struggles of Black Americans.
Of course it got mutated into an insult by bigots and racists and used as a cudgel to attack people.
Also “safe space”, “trigger warning”, “liberal”, “democrat”, and so on, and so on, and so on.
There’s no point listing all of them, because you can’t. The moment you come up with a new way of describing a concept, or when you come up with a new insight, they, very deliberately, poison that new word or phrase to take it away from you.
The point is to deny their enemies (who are, I repeat, people like everyone here) anything nice. No comfort, no understanding, no analysis of what’s going on. If we are denied even the words to describe basic human kindnesses or their performative cruelties, then the idea is that we’re left with only their ways of describing it. Their framing. Their foundational assumptions.
And if we ever manage reclaim a concept, then they reserve the right to Peterson away its definition again so that it poisons us all over again.
CF voted down the book-burning anti-everything trio of gooch, grundel, and taint back in November.
“Four.”
I laughed out loud. Mostly I weep at Ruben Bolling’s punchlines, but this one gave me hope for the future. I am not sure that’s what he intended.
