Check out BMW's new color-changing car, which can go from white to black in an instant

There’s also electro-luminescent paint that i’ve seen floating around for the last few years

Pfft. I can make a Ford Focus go from pure white to dingy gray.

I just need to drive it down a highway covered with snow, rock salt, and ash.

Rest assured this stunning technology will soon be abused and ruined by making it “more” than it is now.

Not impressed:

Yes, the car needs an “ink” function.

Wait til the color changing capability is only sold as a subscription. Sure, the hardware’s there, but ya can’t use it unless you pay.

I’ll keep to E39s.

I’d really love to do this to my electric bicycle, to be better seen at night. The frame is fatter than standard bicycles, so I feel I would be more visible.

Back in the day IIRC we took cars to Earl Scheib for a one-hour color change. Cost less than a new Beemer even then.

At least 20 years ago, I attended a Color Marketing Group event. In a breakout session, there was a color stylist from GM in our small group. He told us about a technology they were investigating/working on that would allow owners to change the color of their cars at will. It involved the surface of the car having a coating of (I think) electrostatic molecules/crystals/somethings that would reorient themselves when you touched a special pen to the surface. The idea was that the consumer could purchase special pens (similar to paint touch-up pens today) that you would simply touch against the surface and the molecules/crystals/somethings would flip to reflect whatever color you purchased.

At the time, they said they had something that sort-of worked on very small pieces, but he was really excited about the potential. It all sounded really cool. Sadly, I’m still waiting for it.

Movie bank-robbers can rejoice?

Actually, I imagine this as a high tech equivalent of those god-quote trucks you see around occasionally; the ones with bible passages written all over them.
