Man, there is some serious overthinking going on in that Learning to Like CCM video.
Syncopation has a long history of use in the Western classical tradition as well. But I’d guess maybe Bach and Handel were possessed by the devil too?
I didn’t even go into this expecting overt racism, but he sure got there quick, didn’t he? What’s especially fucked up is that he describes the good form of combining melody and rhythm as “like a march”. That tracks.
Edited for less word salad.
We need an “Amazing Randi” for music theory.
And Bach used syncopation in al lot of works even in Mathews Passion and cantatas. And used a lot of jazzy chord progressions .
syncopation corrupts music and your soul
so that’s what that funny feeling is…
“Syncopation, by all the cult experts around the world agree, syncopation is the source of cult power in pagan worship services.”
also i think he’s saying “occult experts” and “occult power.”
And they used a lot of II, V, I chord progression with 7ths and diminished passing chords.
@ 2:05:
Apparently Captain Kangaroo and the Grandfather Clock song were tools of Satan. Who knew?
1:03 “All of a sudden you’ve got what we’d call sort of a rap or a hip-hop feel”
so no, I will skip the “thinly veiled”.
These people are seriously fucking nuts. And, as has been pointed out, seriously fucking racist.
Yeah this guy is basically " I am completely ignorant of the history of music but also afraid of anything that doesn’t sound like Pat Boone."
One could only hope.
“There is no such thing as devil’s music, the devil’s too dumb to create.”
It’s a paraphrase from Johnny Cash.
Ccm is hot garbage and mostly copied from successful “secular” musicians.
If you want second best, then listen to CCM.
It’s well known the Devil has all the best tunes.
It may be too late for me. I tried listening only to *NSYNC for a while, but I relapsed.
It’s a lot weirder than just sticking Christian lyrics on mediocre 80s rock though. That by itself would just be bland music. CCM is way more off-putting and at least part of the point of the video was to figure out why that is.
