CNN political analyst says Trump will fire Pence on July 16, 2020

Would having lots of “acting” cabinet members factor into this?

I agree with you about her accomplishments, reputation, etc. Every detail right up until you say that her demographic traits wouldn’t matter at all in the election. I feel that the sad truth is that she would give a nonzero number of people a justification, no matter how puerile, to vote for that ticket.

The Constitution is silent on who makes up the Cabinet - it’s comprised of whatever officers the Senate confirms as members of the Cabinet.

The 'acting’s are at least supposed to have been already in a post requiring Senate confirmation. That’s true even of certain junior officers, and is coming up in the Cuccinelli case.

Then again, it’s practically a tautology that the constitution can’t guide you out of a constitutional crisis.

I’m with you. Something that bigots love is members of a targeted group that side with them. Homophobes loved Steve Bannon’s gay acolyte (there’s some names best left unsaid), racists love Ben Carson, misogynists love Tomi Lahren.

I mean, they “love” them. They’ll turn on them in a second. But until the time to turn on them comes, they really, deeply believe that if they can find a single woman who says the government needs to control women’s bodies or a single black man who says police need to throw young black men against a wall then that is some kind of ultimate weapon in political debate.

Well, “Bob” knows I’m not an expert in how non-MAGAs end up voting for Turmp. But I struggle to imagine the person who’d tolerate him just because her name was on the bumper sticker.

Plus, I don’t feel like it would do much for the morale of Turmp’s core supporters. She may be a cipher, but she’s not chained to an Appalachian stove, and that probably seems a bit shrill and uppity to them.

If she’s a New York state resident, then Trump’s change to Florida would make weird sense, to prevent the Electoral College problem when Pres/VP are from the same state.

That’ll give Mike and Melanie a shared experience to bond over.

In that nightmare scenario I think I’ll get a small kick out of seeing someone ask Nikki Haley what they think of the choice.

This guy is assuming large public gatherings will still be allowed 130 or so days from now.

I’m thinking we’ll be living in a radically changed world by then. I really doubt there will actually be an election; perfect excuse.

Dark times, friends … dark times.

Trump’s religious base have proven to be surprisingly malleable. Once they decided Trump was their saviour, Pence was only in as long as he’s with Trump.

If you can’t trust a Dem political operative on this, who can you trust?
Then again, maybe he’s right! Maybe putting Pence uncharge of handing the Don’s first real crisis is a set up? Pence gets the axe for inept handling of the crisis – notwithstanding that it per se can’t be handled competently by this administration.

I think if Begala was right they might not be right anymore. Trump would easily change their VP pick just to make someone else wrong, or to not appear predictable.
