The view from The Root…

I bet that “My Pillow” are busy making Buckwheat pillows right now.

Or maybe destroying their buckwheat pillows. Hard to tell with racists.

Eddie Murphy: Yeah, Buckwheat and Farina. Some people are named after their fathers, we were named after our father’s favorite breakfast.

It’s racist whenever referring to a Black person, or making any association thereof.

It’s not racist when you’re talking about inanimate objects in general, like pancakes or pillows.

I know that ‘common sense’ isn’t at all “common” anymore, but this isnt rocket science.

I’m from outside the USA and I get it.

When somebody says “that’s racist,” you believe them, not pick it apart like this is Social Studies 101.

I had a similar conversation with someone yesterday about the “Ok” sign being appropriated by the far right. It’s all about context. If a racist mass murderer is flashing it at his trial or fuckhead cops are flashing it at a protest it’s clearly a nazi call sign. If my mom does it while saying “alright”, it means alright. Context, and as you said common sense, are extremely important.

Exactly.

All too often, I find that people asking such ‘clarifying’ questions are intentionally being obtuse, so as to avoid actually dealing with the unpleasant topic at hand.

So you’re asking

if one were, at a restaurant, to order one of the items listed on the menu, would that be racist

This is an actual thing to be concerned about?

In reference to a person? Always racist.

No it is not. However I frequently find that the scope of certain aspects of racism in the United States to be way off my experience or expectation. If someone had responded that all uses of buckwheat in the modern US had racist undertone while the rest of the world thought it was a food item: I would be surprised but not that surprised.

Somehow you always struck me as slightly more astute than that.

What a charmer. His strongest debate technique is to repeatedly yell “Why are you yelling at me” after admitting that he knew exactly what he did wrong.

Okay, just maybe this guy isn’t actually racist. Maybe he really does refer to everyone in wholly inappropriate terms of endearment?

For all we know, he refers to the Former Guy as “Sweet Cheeks” … just like most of the Republican members of Congress.

Naaaaaaaa!

He probably simply misspoke – he meant to call him Spanky but got confused.

Even if he had meant a food item (He didn’t), would it have been any better if, in the chamber of the state House, he’d said to a fellow legislator:

“I’m getting there. Don’t worry Cupcake. I’m getting there.”

I can’t think of any respectful ways to refer to someone as a food item, outside of maybe a Britcom set at least a century ago, or a Tom Swift book, old bean.

Huh.

State Committees

Ugh: he’s seated on the state committee responsible for behavioral health legislation. Not comforting to know.

State legislators
Salary
$40,242/year for legislators whose terms commence in or after January 2019; $30,000/year for those whose terms began before January 2019.

So he’s making $30-40K/yr as a state rep.
He’s a rancher too, acc. to his Wikipedia entry.
No idea if he’s making money at that gig. Farming and ranching are notoriously fraught economic propositions, at least in Texas. Maybe it’s more lucrative elsewhere. And yeah, scarcity of water has a big impact on profit margin.

These statistics are for household income, not one person’s annual income, in CO:

Colorado Household Income

According to the Census ACS 1-year survey, the median household income for Colorado was $77,127 in 2019 , the latest figures available. Compared to the median US household income, Colorado median household income is $11,415 higher. 2020 Census ACS data (including 2020 Colorado household income numbers) will be released in September of 2021.

vs… for example…

Bingo Bob after the West Wing VP from Colorado who also cosplayed as a cowboy.

But of course, none of his personal finances are relevant to the issue at hand. It’s not less racist if he’s poor. It’s still a racist, dismissive thing that he did to a colleague.

Agreed.

What I wanted to uncover is the constellation of privileges he may or may not have.

There are any number of doofus Texas pols here who say awful things, and they come from all walks of life.
