Since I’ve gotten onto this tangent, I want to mention that the “Silver Streak” was neither silver, nor nude.
It seems complaints about the names of fictional characters are very limited, and predictably so.
Not his whole career. Sandman was great. But I’d have preferred it if he’d done more wholly original work than continuing in that vein.
Sales figures prove me wrong on this one, of course. And hopefully he enjoys what he does.
But Sandman isn’t made of sand. Like god & Marvel intended.
There was something like this made some years ago.
Blanca is such a common name in Latin America.
Sandman is shot through with recycled mythologies. The name of the character comes from an old DC property that had not been in use for years, and he riffed off that. While the Endless are his creation, even there, he’s pulling on much older ideas - that forces that shape our lives can be anthropomorphized. What makes Gaiman a compelling writer is his attention to myths and his ability to make them speak to us today.
That’s how culture actually works - it’s endless riffing. updating, and recycling of various myths/folktales/legends/concepts/ideas/etc. It’s the capitalist system that fools us into thinking that each cultural work needs to be totally unique, with no influence from other culture. But that’s not how culture or the human brain works. We are constantly influenced by the world around us, and that’s as true for artists as it is for any of us.
Right!
Oh, let’s take it back even further: he should have the hono(u)r of being the one to tell William Shakespeare the same thing!
Considering how long you’ve dragged this out from your original comment suggesting a pornographic actress being suited for the role, are you just screwing with everyone here and don’t really think the actress needs to be super white? It almost seems like a bit at this point.
Definitely better than his role in that movie. Olaf means “ancestor’s heir”, so is a singularly inappropriate name for a snowman created de novo. I imagine at least Scandinavian children must have been left with a lot of questions.
“Homer”!
or
c) It’s a fictional character and can be retconned any freaking way they want.
Although if you do that, what’s next, a non-white Alexander Hamilton? Heaven forbid.
No, in this case I don’t think that’s a good option.
My god, the horror of giving representation in a new generation of a classic character.
You should definitely get right on filming your version.
A character named on the premise that greater whiteness equates to greater beauty, yes. Not sure why y’all are so desperate to perpetuate that.
There are no people whiter than pink.
