Conservatives idolize a cowboy that never existed outside Westerns and comic books

Oh, please don’t leave out the positive depictions of illegal entries, ‘roughing up’ suspects and the relentless negative portrayals of defense lawyers and judges.

The phrase copaganda exists for a reason.

Of course he did… he was a Black man in America, in the 19th century.

Same as it ever was…

You know how in many classic westerns the cavalry comes to the rescue at the pivotal moment? Yeah, that’s the government.

Chili Palmer: What?

Bo Catlett: Only this time it ain’t no John Wayne and Dean Martin shooting bad guys in “El Dorado”.

Chili Palmer: That was “Rio Bravo”. Robert Mitchum played the drunk in “El Dorado”. Dean Martin played the drunk in “Rio Bravo”. Basically, it was the same part. Now John Wayne, he did the same in both. He played John Wayne.

He was… okay as an actor before he started believing his own bullshit and had a good director. I.e. when he would still take direction and play a character instead of “John Wayne”.

All one really has to know about him is that he didn’t join the army in WW II because he was afraid it would hurt his career. He wasn’t obliged to join, but he could have. Plenty of his colleagues who were his age and older did. What a model patriot.

(I really like that one scene in Trumbo.)

Its a thing you can’t currently distinguish from a law enforcement perspective from a gun smuggler or mass murderer preparing.

All thanks to the enforced inability of the ATF to collect national level gun sales data and effective background checks. All thanks to NRA lobbying efforts. They also oppose domestic violence legislation and gun safety laws.

“Law abiding gun owners” are invoked to oppose laws that would benefit such people and distinguish them from miscreants. Myth

As opposed to David Niven, who also was not obliged (by dint of prior service and living in the US), but volunteered. The only British actor in Hollywood who did so. He served with the Commandos as a communications specialist.

Jimmie Stewart, Audie Murphy, Paul Newman, Clark Gable, Josephine Baker, and on and on.

Audrey Hepburn worked for the Dutch Resistance. Audrey Hepburn ffs was a war hero, and people idolize John Wayne.

The worst part of John Wayne’s lack of acting skills was that he taught generations of young men that it was unacceptable to show any emotion other than anger.

When you spend zero time thinking about how your beliefs work, hollywood fantasy comes in handy to fill in all the gaps in logic and reason.

A conservative brain putty of sorts.

And Latino. Most of the American cowboy mythos is lifted straight from actual Mexican ranch hands and how they worked. The dress, the mannerisms, the lifestyle, all of it. The Mexican cowboys wore different hats. That’s about it.

I’d absolutely love for that to have happened, although it would discount the possibility of early versions of GOOP and Gwyneth Paltrows to have existed back then.

Another real cowboy.

Part of this myth is also rooted in the genocidal settler-colonial mythic concept of the “frontier,” the idea that cowboys were living independently and ruggedly on the edge of untamed land. When what they were really doing is encouraging the further expansion of settlers into Indigenous land, the theft of that land, and the displacement and murder of its people.

You don’t need to include the reference to the century, really.

Even today black folks are getting screwed 6 ways from Sunday. Hell, when a black american was elected president, it pissed off a significant fraction of Americans so much that they decided to nuke democracy from orbit rather than risk it happening again.
