Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 2)

I read another article the other day, about the fear of some native people of the vaccine. Some bad missionaries said the vaccine was actually the mark of the beast and when the health workers arrived, they said they won´t get the shots.

I’m surprised that in their late-stage capitalism party-town shit-hole covid19 is affecting anyone they give a shit about.

This single immunocompromised patient was actively infected for 154 days.

It’s a little buried in the article, never mind the lede, but the “single immunocompromised patient” was on immunosuppressants for an autoimmune disease and died 154 days later.

So… “sucks to be him”, profoundly… however…

FTA:

“Toward the very end of his life, he was treated with monoclonal antibodies, from Regeneron,” Li says. “And shortly thereafter, we saw evidence that suggested the virus was developing resistance or escaping from these antibodies as well.”

So… are we all done with this kid-glove “gentle shutdown” approach yet? My vote is solidly for the :new_zealand: solution… late as it is in the game, and as spent as our initial resources are, what we’re doing is a collective torment with no end in sight.

Anyone have any sense about this site? Showed up in my Google feed and seems well written and informative.

I’ve realized I hate my kids, so let’s start killing teachers.

Yeah, I posted that in haste, so thanks for the digging here…

Yes x 1000.

I am in Texas and not hopeful.

Apart from Austin and some parts of El Paso, Houston, San Antonio, there’s just no way a New Zealand-style solution would be feasible in most of Texas, on any level (politically, socially, you name it).

Austin’s excellent and amazing but it’s surrounded, just terrifying surrounded, by some very vocal bad-faith humans. I remind all reading this: Alex Jones [whom I refuse to link to] lives here in Texas. Probably in the next county over from me. So like, those kinds of bad-faith actors. It doesn’t take many especially during a pandemic to wreck things for all of us.

It’s pretty bad alright–you nailed it:

I interviewed 10 scientists for this story and was surprised by the vehemence of some of their language. “Are you sure it could be that bad?” I asked, over and over.

They unanimously said they expected B.1.1.7, the variant first discovered in the U.K., to eventually become the dominant version of coronavirus in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that B.1.1.7 will become dominant in March, using a model that presumes it’s 50% more transmissible than the original “wildtype” coronavirus. The model’s transmission rate was based on experience in the U.K., which first detected B.1.1.7 in September and saw an increase in cases that became apparent in December, straining hospitals despite stringent closures and stay-at-home orders. So while our country appears relatively B.1.1.7-free right now, the situation could look drastically different in a matter of months.

Damn it to hell. We are just past the holiday peak and maybe coming down somewhat. All we have to do is not be stupid. And here we go…

I hear you.
It’s double plus ungood.

Our food co-op sells these

and in January, I started taking them because I did something bad to my shoulder in a major way. Yes, anti-inflammatory. And yes, they do take the edge off, a wee bit, without making me dumb in a way that I or my DH notice.

Hey, at least we got rid of the aggressively pro-stupid :tangerine:  so that’s a start. Hoping Team Biden will be able to pull the rabbit outta one hella big hat.

Remember this political cartoon?

I can’t help but imagine this must be similar but somehow worse for Biden’s first 100 minutes, except the photo we got from official channels looked like this:

… so… ok yeah… go Joe! Git 'em!

If you’ve been watching the dashboard, its the zip codes nearest conservative Williamson County, like us, with consistently high positively rates.

Him living in Texas didn’t surprise me. Him living near Austin suprised me. Maybe it keeps his rage machine stoked?

Hmm…this interview from last June (it’s a 17-minute video, or read the transcript there), talking with the physicians who are behind Brief19, leads to me feeling a lot of confidence in it.

I wish these “open our schools” activists would target the “open our bars” assholes, and the “you can’t make me wear a mask” “activists.” They’re the reason we can’t safely open our schools. Or at least critical factors.
