Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 2)

Where do the vaccines come from?

That’s where flu vaccines come from, but I don’t think it’s where the coronavirus vaccines come from.

In the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, the active ingrediant is mRNA which is chemically synthesized then encapsulated in a lipid droplet using microfluidic technology. Our cells take the mRNA and use it to produce viral proteins, which the immune system is then prepared to respond to if it encounters them again.

In the viral vector vaccines, the active ingredient is DNA which is incorporated into the genetic material of a chimpanzee (AZ, Sputnik) or human (J&J) cold virus which is modified not to be able to make copies of itself, and cultured in human cells originally derived from a foetus aborted in the 1970s (the so-called HEK-293 cell line). The DNA is then read by our cells and used to make those same viral proteins.

In the Novavax protein adjuvant vaccine, the active ingredient is the viral protein itself, which is expressed in cultured moth cells.

As far as I know, the only coronavirus vaccine using the ‘‘traditional’’ method of virus production in hens’ eggs is Sinovac.

I know of at least one Finnish microbiologist, who wanted to inject chicken with Covid-19 antibodies, so you could isolate them from the eggs and use them for an inhaled spray that would grant a brief, temporary immunity (you’d need to take another spray every day or so). I don’t think it went anywhere, but there were quite a few articles about it in Finnish media last summer.

Must kill, must increase the pain.

There are still too many people flying, and they’re standing in superspreader queues.

Fun fact: I REALLY enjoy wearing a FFP2 mask these days outdoors. This is the worst year since 2011 for ny pollinosis. I’m not reacting particularly strong against hazel, but this year, the pollen count is simply too much.

I might stock up on cheap masks for the next decades as soon as the pandemic is in such a decline that the PPU drops sharply.

ETA, got distracted, came here to post this:

And this is mask-related, so that figures.

I can’t be bothered to read this with full attention, since it’s pissing me off in so many ways. Just FTR and for completeness, AFAIR Armin Laschet’s son lobbied for a textile manufacturer to get a mask contract, which was only revoked after someone noticed that no official tender was performed. I would bet @FGD135 has more on him, since Laschet is prime minister in the state they are living in.

Ah, It was a bad joke about trees fighting us back.

The original post was:

So I put a link for the bad movie about killer trees.

IMO your joke was a good joke! I understood it

I was only pretending to look askance at your post, because, for me “The Happening” means a great song associated with a different movie

Great song indeed! This is the first time I have seen this clip and I was impressed.

And today was the day. Dose Nr. 1 of the finest Moderna. My 5G phone service is now all messed up, and I set off the shoplifting sensors at Walmart. How they got such a powerful tracking chip through such a teeny-tiny needle is amazing! /s

It’s about seven hours post jab, and my arm feels a (very) little sore and warm above the injection site, lymph nodes in my neck feel a (very) little swollen, and I’m kinda “spacey”. All started about an hour after the jab. The mental fog is the most annoying side effect.

Let us know when the superpowers manifest! As for me, I received the regular old J&J stick today. No superpowers for me. :frowning:

I wonder the degree to which mask wearing will continue to be socially acceptable so that you can be saved from the pollen in future years as well.

My wife got an invitation from the state of New Mexico to get her shot. I on the other hand got this email:

Notice from NM Department of Health. New Mexico is the most efficient state in the country for vaccine distribution, but demand still exceeds supply. If you have not received your vaccine, please wait for a notification. Please do NOT show up at a vaccine event without an appointment. Doing so creates additional health risks. Thank you for your understanding.

I.e wait your turn and don’t skip ahead.

It’s Microsoft chips, so you should get a prompt to reboot now or to wait until outside of working hours.
