Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 2)

I agree with the sentiment but am unsure of our short-term options for a resolution. Most politicians are either saying “do as I say, not as I do” or “do whatever the fuck you want.” Neither is the leadership we need right now. As for Newsom specifically, I’m all for making it clear that he should suffer political consequences, but in what form? The last recall of a California governor was a months-long fiasco that ended up with a Republican movie star as Governor.

I guess we are all struggling with that. In Ireland the politicians who were caught flouting the rules
1 resigned if a minister and stayed in parliament
2 lost the party whip if in the upper chamber (again this means that they lose government status on committees and stuff)
3 resigned from possibly the most significant European Commission job
4 and a new Supreme Court judge who brazened it out due to our failure to have a proper method to censure judges (they can only be impeached - not the word in the constitution but it requires both houses to vote for their removal). This one is running. The Chief Justice said that the supreme court judges didn’t want to sit with him. He’ll resign or there will be some form of a constitutional crisis.

Basically in order to govern the highest priority is the consent of the governed. How this works is of course dependent on the jurisdiction. Ijust think the first point is that the public should be united in holding them to account. If I were Newsom the amount of grovelling I would be doing to the people I’m governing would be extensive, deep, and involve listening to people’s concerns and showing certain contrition. The judge above docked his own pay but his lack of sincerity in his nopology and what he said to the outgoing chief justice under questioning disgusted the population.

Great, so long as we handle rich white men like toddlers, they’ll be slightly less assholish.

Really, the only reason he could “reach” musk was because the doctor flattered his oversized ego and didn’t call him out on his BS that has been incredibly destructive to human life on Covid.

I’m really curious what the F&F jackals would think about a guest putting up funny memes about 9/11 to have a good chuckle?

I wonder if the folks who product PSAs accept suggestions. I’d love to see a few commercials where misbehaving kids in denial about basic health precautions learn their lesson (through experience or a few words from their parents) and stop throwing temper tantrums. Bonus points if at the end they share their new-found knowledge with other kids throwing tantrums.

And because he was another White man in a position of authority.

“According to the Mount Sinai Health System, the majority of long-haulers they’ve treated are between 20 and 40 years old, they’re most often women and they have no known underlying health conditions.”

“Chen said that scientists are still trying to figure out the best way to care for these patients. He said that the number one way to prevent long-term effects is to protect yourself from getting the virus in the first place.”

Yeah, not the flu, not like a “normal” viral infection. And 10% doesn’t sound like much until you throw in 11 million + cases and rising (that we know of.) The world will be different after this.

I’m picturing something along the lines of those Snickers commercials, but the actors switch from whining Maga-wearing babies into regular sensible people, lol.

Yeah. I’m so tired of people throwing the statistic of “99% of people live,” as if that’s awesome. If someone invited me to a party of 100 people, but told me that for sure, 10 to 15 attendees would suffer long-term negative health impacts, at least 5 would be hospitalized and 1 would die, I would NOT go to that party.
I certainly wouldn’t host that party.

A Scottish library worker is punished for breaking COVID safety rules by helping vulnerable people.

It’s a thread, but this tweet stood out

Absolutely! But if he had been critical of Musk, he would have ignored him, I think. A woman or person of color of any gender with the same credentials and approach would be instantly dismissed.

Librarians are fucking heroes. Full stop.

That’s completely true, but given the fact that the guy named like reptile cloaca gland schmeer retweeted the rebuttal made it worth it, in my book.

We need everyone to catch up with the facts, and those who listen to that guy need more convincing than sensible people.

None the less, we really shouldn’t have to walk on egg shells to get people to act with basic human decency. That fact that there are some grown ass adults who can’t be arsed to accept basic facts of science unless they are cajoled like children is really infuriating. This should be especially true of people who claim they’re all about science, as Musk does. The fuck he is, acting like facts about the pandemic aren’t based on science.

This one too:

The crime here is that these are our only options! We should not be in this position! Nobody should end up this desperate and library staff should be empowered and equipped to help people safely.

Though I would argue this shouldn’t have to come to the library.

To steal some verbiage from above “ The crime here is that these are our only options! We should not be in this position! Nobody should end up this desperate”.

If the idiots in DC had passed additional relief support people wouldn’t have to worry about going to work and placing themselves and everyone at risk. If they had mobilized nationally and made n95 masks available to everyone- so many people wouldn’t have died, gotten sick and possibly have a disability for life.
