Continuing coronavirus happenings (Part 2)

I just received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine. (In group 1b, for chronic health issues.) No side effects. I am so happy and I want everyone to get this vaccine so that we can close this dark chapter.

Almost an year since the western media started reporting about COVID, and they still use mostly asians in the pictures when talk about it, even if there is no relation between the person and the news.

Itā€™s still amazing how quickly it can spiral out of control. Our test and trace system has now collapsed and hospital admissions are going to be catastrophic for a run to the ground by neoliberals health system.

Because the government listened to short sighted lobby groups and hired a consultant (Ernst and Young) to advise them rather than accept the advice of the expert group. Fuck consultants always but particularly here. We were at 300 a day and test positivity of over 2% and all quite stable with schools open but businesses and socialising not. Now itā€™s 3,000+ and test positivity shows that we canā€™t even track whatā€™s going on as itā€™s 20%. Kids better get used to hanging round indoors for a couple of months. The ongoing collapse will really adversely impact vaccine rollout too.

Thatā€™s the plan! Looks like June/July for me, but Iā€™m signed up for email updates in case anything changes.
At this point, just having an end in sight is a huge relief. And Iā€™m so glad people at higher risk are finally getting some protection. More than happy to wait my turn hunkered down!

I didnā€™t see this posted yetā€¦

Seems the UK COVID-19 variantā€™s transmissibility has been quantified; to first order, anyhow

Prof Axel Gandy of Londonā€™s Imperial College said the differences between the viruses types was ā€œquite extremeā€.

Can we call it ā€œUKOVIDā€? ā€œBoJoVidā€? The Boris Variant?

This is the first I have heard about this strain hitting kids harder. That could well be a huge game changer!

0.7 increase in R is massive! Thatā€™s nuts. And very scary.

Very much so. Original reports said increase from 1.1 to 1.4, which was bad. If this really is closer to 1.7-1.8, that is solidly in OMFG! territory. Add in reports of hitting kids harder, and a snailā€™s pace rollout of vaccination, and we are in trouble

Good thing they didnā€™t sacrifice their economy.

Oh god, well, thereā€™s one more desperately tenuous link in the supply chain.
