More grist for the Long COVID mill. Impact of Long COVID appears to be around 1% to 1.3% of GDP accounting for just the lost wages.

Also reported in the Guardian.

So, back in July I said that something was wrong at the Ontario :canada: Science Table

Turns out that Michael Sherar, the newly appointed head of the perennially and increasingly intellectually challenged Public Health Ontario, as well as our politically compromised Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, have had enough of having smart, media-friendly scientists walking around doing independent, competent science-y stuff. The message here appears to be that we should just suck up the fact that Ontario will likely kill 20% more people with COVID in 2022 compared to 2020, and get back to work lining the pockets of the corporate masters of the Provincial Conservative government.

As usual, the Toronto Star’s Bruce Arthur has a stinging overview of this political s**tshow.

When told of the ministry’s denial that they were being shut down, one science table member simply wrote back, “B.S.” No further negotiations are currently scheduled.

So if you’re a younger adult (under 65) this new study suggests that Paxlovid offers no measurable benefit, although it confirmed the earlier results that it helps keep older people out of the hospital:

Aw s**t… it’s official. The Science Table COVID-19 Advisory for Ontario :canada: is gone.

Along the way, we were also reminded of key principles that will help Ontario manage the
continued dangers of COVID-19 and other public health crises. Among those lessons, we would
offer the following for your consideration:

  • Science matters
  • Equity counts
  • Transparency is critical
  • Independence must be both perceived and delivered
  • Timeliness and relevance are essential

The COVID-19 pandemic continues, and it contributes to Ontario’s growing number of health
system crises. Each of us on the Science Table has a contribution to make in the effort to secure
Ontario’s health, and we will now return fully to that work.

Day 4. Throat doesn’t really hurt anymore. Congestion comes and goes but isn’t crippling. Cough kinda sucks but I’ve had far worse. No temperature. For the most part things aren’t much different than any other mild flu or head cold. The biggest frustrations right now are this never ending weakness and tiredness. I haven’t felt this level of persistent physical exhaustion since I had pneumonia several years ago and I’m guessing it’s due to my lungs not being able to get as much oxygen as normal even though breathing isn’t particularly difficult or anything. Either way, pretty much any physical exertion is exhausting. Even getting out of bed takes motivation.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/28/politics/free-at-home-covid-test-government-program-ending/index.html

Ordering through this program will be suspended on Friday, September 2

Still, the official said the administration would “expeditiously resume distribution of free tests through COVIDTests.gov” if and when Congress allocates additional funding, but “[u]ntil then, we believe reserving the remaining tests for distribution later this year is the best course.”

Here we go I think. Terrible body aches, every joint hurts, even the joints in my hands and feet. Chills started around 9pm, and now after four hours of fitful sleep I have a fever of 100.5. No congestion yet but my chest may be feeling tight (I dunno). I have no home test kits so I guess I have to leave the house in the morning to go get one.

I’m sure this has nothing to do with the deletion of the mask requirement at work, coupled with new CDC guidelines that make no sense. For example I have an employee who was at home quarantining for five days already come up positive on Friday, and now wants to know if he can come in to work today since he did five days of quarantine. sigh

Speedy, complete recoveries to you and @ficuswhisperer !!!

[My BF’s doc recco’d we take it V easy, get lots and lotsa rest & sleep, and lots and lotsa fluids - esp lotsa chicky soup! - when we had the plague in Feb. Mine weren’t too bad, and his symptoms were far milder, both after our shots & when we’d caught it. My joint pain wasn’t that bad, but it was frequent, and in addition to the exhaustion and all the other crap it made me crabby AF. The worst part was a temporary loss of mental acuity. It was as if 50 IQ points had fled & my normally powerful memory was fried. My giftedness and then some had been drained, leaving me w/an IQ of 85, until my brain’s well slowly but noticeably refilled herself with the good stuff. I couldn’t find at least two V common words every time I spoke a sentence, and I am normally a walking fucking dictionary and thesaurus. Couldn’t type m’way outta a wet paper bag, neither. Gen’l coordination was also poor: bumped into doorways, bookcases, etc. It has only been w/in the last couple weeks that my perspicacity has finally fully returned. Scared hell outta me: I am my mind, and the thought of living another 2-3 decades while stupid holds no appeal whatsoever. My BF said to just try to remain calm, be patient, stop berating myself for being stupid, and give it more time. Wisdom.]

Thanks for the reminder!

@anon87143080 - hope you heal quickly. I know you blame horrible public health guidelines, but I’m looking pretty hard at Crackhead right now…never know where that critter’s been :unamused:
Seriously, though, did your wife get it, too, or are you both quarantining now? Good luck!

She has no symptoms and was holding the critter for the longest, but good point.
